What is tec diving?

Non-technical divers use the word. Most technical divers don't.

My buddies and I don't say, "Hey, let's go make a technical dive." We say, Let's go do a 180' dive, or a trimix dive, or a wreck dive, or a scooter dive, or (yeah, in my dreams) a cave dive.

Recreational divers refer to our dives as technical, but we don't.

Of course, DIR divers refer to their dives as technical. They say, hey, let's go do a tech1 dive...

Here are some (not entirely serious but all equally valid) definitions of technical diving

- Technical diving is using anything more elaborate than a snorkel to breath.

- Technical diving is when you spend more time planning the dive than diving the plan.

- Technical diving is when you learn a new skillset and you struggle at it. When you begin to apply it without conscious thought, it becomes rec diving again and you are more than ready for the next step in tech diving.

- Technical diving is changing gaz mix during the dive.
When I will begin to change gaz mix during the dive, technical diving will be diving with hypo mixes.
When I will begin to dive with hypo mixes, technical diving will be diving with a rebreather.
When I will begin to dive with a rebreather, technical diving will be... Err... Professional diving.
And since I will never dive professionally, I will always be a rec diver!

Just as a shortcut meaning one bottle.

Interesting. Though I'd venture to say that a lot of freediving is much more challenging and requires as much if not more technique than your run of the mill 30 foot tropical reef dive.
