I'll probably be castigated for this, and read what you will into it, but I understand that regs will fail in free flow if they fail. In a pool this is not an issue IMHO. When my Reg failed it was gradual. Also it was my first stage that went.

Sam, I'm going to be flamed but if you think that 45 quid is a lot of money to go diving, you are in for one BIG surprise later. :D

Just guessing, from your #2 pic:
  • (+) The filter appears to be clean, which means the reg has not seen any ovious bad treatment, or has not seen a lot of use since last serviced
  • (+) The hex bolt head of the retainer doesn't have any visible nicks: which means the service person probably has proper tooling
From your pic #4:
  • (-) The cable tie is not cut flush with the mouth piece, which means the service person is not as meticulous as I'd like
Overall, the reg seems to be in good shape. You still need to test it.

Don't worry about the tag, it's just an ID for the previous dive op. You can cut it off if you want.

And yes, someone with a "normal" income needs to invest a sizeable portion of it in diving, e.g. a week in Egypt is over a grand.

That second photo of my Stage 1 Reg on the previous page showing the filter, is that clip supposed to be in there? I've found the following photos, the first doesn't appear to have a filter or a clip, and the second, has a filter, but the clip seems to be just around the outer edge and not accross the centre of the filter like it is on mine - won't mine interfere with airflow?

If you look closely, there is a clip in both of those shots however they are 2 different kinds- one is a star washer and one is a circlip, your is a 3rd type. All 3 are commonly use in scuba regs. The surface are covered by the clip is not enought to be of any concern.

Looking at the reg the condition seems fine for the age. It looks to me that the first stage is an unbalanced piston design similar to a Scubapro MK-2, the second stage is probably a classic downstream design. I would think that aftermarket parts would probably fit it. The question is finding a tech that would try to fit the parts. Does Trident sell in the UK?

Hi Guys, thanks for your replies, I contacted the UK Distributor for Seac Sub and they provided details of two agents in the UK, one of which is only about 30 drivei phoned them today and spoke to a lady, who said they do service Seac Sub, and can get the parts, but the guy I need to speak to is on holiday until Monday.

Just as a matter of interest, do you guys all get your regs serviced every year?

Is there any statistics on whether this reduces regulator failures?

I'm so tempted to use these regs but a bit worried at the same time until.I get them serviced, but even then there is no guarantee a reg wont fail just because its been serviced, and I suppose the same goes for a brand new reg just purchased, there is no guarantee.....

My regs go 3 to 5 years between service, depending on which reg and how much I use it. A simple flow by piston like this one is, I would be surprized if I got less than 4 or 5 years out of the first stage and maybe 3 out of the second stage. Understand this assumes it was serviced correctly and just as importantly, properly taken care of after the service. The big unknowns you have are - when was it really serviced and how well was it taken care of since then. That is the reason we all suggest you have it serviced, once you do, then you have a starting point to base your decisions on.

Hi guys, I'm planning on using these regs in a pool shortly, haven't had them serviced yet, but will only be in a pool, what's the chance of any crap being inside the regs or tubing for example spiders and the like, and how can I go a out reducing this risk of.choking on something that I might inhale from the regs? If i blow it through once connected to the air tank and press the purge valve for a few times?

Sam, if you put the regs on a tank and purge them any insects and the like will be blown out the mouthpiece.
