Visit the rungus long houses up north in Kudat and drop by and have some cheap but lovely seafood in kudat..

take a drive from kk to tambunan, stay in a homestay with a local family, drive on to keningau, tenom and then over the crocker range mountains to spitang and then back to kk...

visit the zoo in kk...one of the best bird parks in malaysia...

spend a day or two out at manukan island...

Sabah is renowned for three things - diving (esp. Sipadan), orang utans/wildlife and Mount Kinabalu.

Mount Kinabalu / climbing has already been covered by another forum member.

Pop over to Sandakan (short fight or interesting 5 - 6 hour car ride over the Crocker Range) and you have access to several wildlife & rainforest attractions - Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Kinabatangan River, Rainforest Discovery Centre etc.).

The diving is wonderful here - Sipadan / Mabul, Layang Layang, Lankayan, wreck diving etc. - so make the most of it and enjoy your few dry days seeing what else Sabah has to offer :)

Uncle Tan's in the Kinabatangan is something you shouldn't miss out on..a 3d2n trip will do you good if you're into nature and wildlife...and there is the australian memorial for the 2000-3000 aussies who perished during the dreaded death march in WW2 in Sandakan and Ranau and Kundasang.

And if you do want to live with a local village family in a homestay, you will have a lot of options to do this for 1-2 days..gives you a great perspective on life in Borneo. And its people.
