My friend has a tank and it has the following stamped on it.

What do they tell?

SRP
4C72+PSI
5S78

Can you tell how old the tank is? Or if it is outdated and should be put in a scrap pile?

Is the "4C72" the manufacturer date?

3AA2250 - Steel tank, working pressure 2250psi
29467 - tank serial number
SRP - manufacturer (?)
4C72+PSI - Manufactured in April 1972 - rated for a 10% overfill
5S78 - Hydro in May of 78.

The tank needs hydro and VIP before use.

If it hydro's and VIP's ok.. would you use it?

If it passes both, use it. To get the "+" rating again, make sure you ask the hydro facility for it specifically. It can flunk the "+" test but still pass the hydro, BTW.

Absolutely I'd use it.
My favorite "rec" tank in the whole world is my old steel '72 from 1972. The buoyancy characteristics of the steel '72 make it possible to dive with zero weights when the water's really warm and you need no neoprene - wonderful.
