Wire ties, bungie cord, velcro straps, to name a few. Mostly depends on what is being attached, where it is being attached

Lot's of ways to skin the cat.

I use dog clips (bolt snaps for you manly divers) for some things (they're cheap, reliable but should never be used if there might be a load).

I use spinaker shackles for anthing that might be under a load.

I use fastclips, inner tube pieces, O-rings, hair ties, rubber bands, etc. for things that are not critical, or that are stored in pockets

I use those reel things for pouches that are stored in pockets.

I try and stay away from carbineers and "suicide clips," but not always.

There are also cable ties, wire ties, rubber straps and always: VELCRO!
etc.

Mainly brass or stainless bolts snaps. I did cheat a bit and used two scissor snaps for the video rig.

Bolt snaps, zip ties, bungee cords, I think that is about all I have used. Stay away from anything that you can can line in with out you opening it. (butterfly clips, suicides, caribiners)

Stainless steel bolt snaps tied onto the object with cave line in a cave knot.

I use a variety of clips but wasn't sure how to attach a small knife to my BC until I saw a PADI video where a diver had the sheath attached with cheap cable ties (about $1 for 50 at the grocery store). The lightbulb went off as I thought, "That's a little ugly, but effective." With all the clips sold for diving, I guess I thought there'd be something a little fancier specifically made for the attachment of BC mounted knives. :) The lesson learned, what works works. As Thalassamania said, "lots of ways to skin the cat".
