I see that this is a very popular thing for the bc - and I am getting ready to buy my first BCD (zeagle brigade) which comes loaded.

I haven't completed o/w yet just pool training. What exactly do you hook to the rings if anything at all?

Compass, slate, small backup lights. I have to admit though, with a wrist mounted compass, and an arm-slate, the chest d-rings are, for a recreational diver, primarily flash.

I attach my SPG to the left hip D-ring. A tether to my SMB is attached to the right hip D-ring.
I attach a variety of things to my chest D-rings. A small backup light is always mounted on my right chest D-ring. When I'm carrying an UW camera, I typically clip it off to that same right chest D-ring. During surface swims, I'll attach my primary light to the left chest D-ring.

Top left Windstorm whistle. Left ring above my pocket my SPG. My right hip my SMB. My octo. is a Sherwood it is not a power inflator type, but plugs into my BC's power inflator. I forget its name and it is not on the octo.

I clip my SPG to the left hip D-ring, a light to the right chest D-ring, and, on rare occasions when I need an extra hand, my camera rig to the right chest D-ring also.

sometimes my camera, always my shears-spool-SMB & clip off my SPG(wear my octo on a necklace).........

You don't want to be a christmas tree diver... having 8 flashy D-rings are your chest is useless. Left hip D-ring= SPG and sometimes P&S camera, left chest- backup light, right chest- primary reg when not in use, can light when stowed, extra double ender, 2nd backup light. Everything else is in my hip pockets.

right side (front) fixed-bent waist D-ring : A. I. hosed computer clipped off
left side (front) fixed-bent waist D-ring: analog hosed SPG clipped off

right side (rear) fixed-bent waist D-ring: Halcyon SMB (bungied loops attached on BP holes)
left side (rear) fixed-bent waist D-ring: Halcyon SMB (bungied loops attached on BP holes)

right side (front) fixed-bent upper chest D-ring: back-up light (handheld) clipped off
left side (front) fixed-bent upper chest D-ring: back-up light (handheld) clipped off

I put as many things in pockets and tucked away spots as possible. I have a retractor on one D-ring for my camera, and a little bungee holder for my octo on a lower ring.

I'm still figuring out how exactly I like everything to be, but I definitely know that it feels weird to have stuff hanging off of your BC everywhere. Stow what you can and use the rings for small stuff or things that can't be easily stashed.

My camera is attached to my left chest D-ring. When I am done taking pictures, I attach it to my right chest as well. If I dive with my 6 cu ft pony, then the octo is attached to my right bottom ring. My pony, sausage, and everything else is put away in pockets or Zeagle zip-on attachments under my bladder.

I don't like anything to hang off of me.
