Well, our trip nears (2 weeks) and of course everybody in the house is sick except me (for now). Gotta love it. So how do you keep from getting sick and preventing diving?

I suppose theres not much other than staying as clear from those that are sick and the usual preventative stuff. Anybody have any fool proof ways?

My extra activities have been curbed somewhat in anticipation of the trip.
I have started to ski a little more conservatively for starters.

What weird things do you do prior to a trip?

Well I don't know about weird things, but I find the most effective two preventives from getting sick are the simplest but most often overlooked: proper rest and hydration. I once kicked a cold in one day (and a bit) by calling in sick and spending the day actually sleeping and drinking water. The particular bug I kicked was one that had the rest of the office gone (in rotations) for upwards of a week each person who got it.

When you feel a cold coming on, or those around you are getting, make sure you get about 1-1/2 the amount of sleep you typically require, and drink about double the amount of water. That way your body will be well armed to fight off the virus/etc naturally.

Trip cancellation insurance also helps if it is available - that way I won't stress about getting sick before a trip, which in itself should help.

Very similar to what I do except I drink a lot more Orange juice and hit the Vitamins heavy.

I agree and usually get it but I skipped it on this trip for some reason. My bad.

I am feeling pretty good right now (knock on wood). I am going to have to go into full conservative mood here in the next day or so.

If I am sick it looks like one of these vacations for me and my SO, which would work quite well also.

:coke: :sappy:

I am always worried about getting sick before a trip as well. My advice is to continue with what you have been doing if you have been healthy for some time. Avoid obvious things like staying away from sick people, wash your hands often (before you eat, after the gym, etc.).

Scott,

At this time of year, take some extra zinc for warding off colds, plenty of Vitamin C, sex, sleep and ....

PS Where are you off to?

Zinc huh, hadn't heard that before. I take GNC, Megaman vitamins which have crazy percentages of like 1500% of daily requirements of some vitamins. I will have to check the label to see if it includes Zink. As for the rest I am working on those.

Off to Playa Del Carmen

Scott,
Zinc - You'll find a lot of good evidence to support it - and I know you'll be beavering away looking it up :) As for the others - well, depends!

PDC - have a great time !- I hate you but it isn't personal - I lied! but you know what I mean!

I once asked a doctor how she avoided getting sick despite being around sick people all day and she told me that if you wash your hands a lot and keep your hands away from your face (i.e. rubbing your eyes, biting your nails, and, yes, picking your nose) you drastically reduce the chance of catching anything.
