I had a Newfy and that big boy was a frigging lifeguard.
He'd pull everybody out of the water weather they wanted it or not and he didn't care if you were in our group,in the next group or some homless person washing off.
I currently have an Austrailan Cattle Dog (aka Blue Heeler) and he wont stray farther than my shadow unless he's going after the frizzbee.
Both are/were stellar dogs.

OK. True story. My brother's lab just LOVES me. I was diving at the lake once when he was there and he stayed on top of the water whereever I was under the water. Now, that's a dive buddy!

Now he is being used as a tow vehicle for my 4 year-old niece. They both get in the water, she grabs his tail, he swims out, she lets go and swims back!

The Bouvier des Flanders, of course!

What about Cocker Spaniel?

A Newfoundland seems to be a great choice. They are bred as water dogs and once served as lifesaving dogs with coast patrols. Lifesaving is always a good thing. I'm getting one soon and naming it Rudder. Anyone have any scuba related names?

I have a Bracco Italiano (Italian Pointer) and he just loves water and than I have a Shar Pei that wouldn't even come close to it.
I had a Bloodhound that was diving 2-3 meters deep and bringing rocks from the buttom of the river. Good diver but unreliable buddy-would take immediatly off after an interesting scent and couldn't care less for you.

All great dogs, granted, but have you considered . . . bears?

Aruka, beautiful dog. Or as I really wanna say, "Awww, what a cute puppy.. yes you is.. yes..." WHy is it the instant I'm around a retreiver my brain turns to mush? ANyways, OBX.... WHat about Cap'n Ahab? Queeg? Hemmingway? Nitrox, Shark bait, Buddy, or Draeger?

Just a few idears.

Iruka:
I have a Labrador Retriever who loves the water. Plus she can bite customers who don't pay up. (kidding!!!) A dive boat here in Guam has a Golden Retriever aboard most of the time. A nice thing about both these kinds of dogs is that they're very even-tempered, and I have no worries about them ACTUALLY biting a customer. Licking one to death, well, maybe!

The Lab I had used to go swimming with me all the time.
She loved the water, chasing sticks and believe it or not, diving for rocks in 4-5 ft river water. Best dog I ever had, she would hardly leave my side. Sure miss her.
