What attracts divers most for diving?

I just love everything about it.
Being a diver is special. Not many people in the overall population are divers.
We worked hard to become divers. We took the big first step to do it.

I love using gear of all sorts from modern to vintage, I love wetsuits and how I look in them, I love being asked on the beach "What do you see?" by non diving beach combers, I love to spear fish then clean them and make a delicious dinner out of them, I love cruising a wall at 100 feet and the feeling of flying (when the vis is good), I love freediving for abalone, I love freezing my ass off once in a while to remind me that diving where I live is real.
I love my tank collection.
I love my mask collection.
I love my reg collection.
I love my fin collection.
I love my custom wetsuit collection.

I just love everything about it, every ounce.

For me,diving means exploration,the underwater is another world,mysterious,dark,so,is it that what attracts most divers for diving?
And which are the best places to dive? Water here is very muddy.

From the time I was very little I had a *need* to be in the water. I still do. I'm simply more at peace diving than doing just about anything else.

Was mesmerized as a kid by UW photos. Now I have the opportunity to travel to and meet the marvelous creatures in those photos (as well as some wonderful people with the same passion for diving). In my mind there really isn't a perfect place to dive as each region and body of water has something to offer and requires different skills and I like trying out new things.

Well there is the peace and tranquility, but i also like the thought of going somewhere and seeing things that the average joe doesnt get to see except maybe on national geo.

I can't remember not swimming. Actually, I can't remember NOT having a mask in the pool. At a very young age I had one of those styrofoam floats that looked like an egg and strapped around the mid-section. It was a float, but by today's standards, would probably be considered some sort of death trap. I would put that thing on as my "tank" don my mask and fins and go diving. Damn thing would keep me floating, but I always wanted to get to the bottom.

Many years later I got certified and dove quite a bit, then got busy with other things. My daughter wanted to give it a try and WOW....I'm back! Cousteau was probably the main culprit though. I never missed an episode when I was a kid....Along with old sea hunt and Flipper episodes.

Now I wish I was closer to the coast. Lived in P'cola for 3 years and never touched a mask.

I can relate to the "astronaut" experience. That's exactly how I feel in the weightless environment - especially during a drift dive.
I had laser surgery about 8 years ago and got my eyesight back - it allowed me to start diving and from day 1 I was hooked. It really is like entering an alien world.
Since then I've grown to appreciate the positive environmental impact that diving has had on my favorite dive locale: The Philippines.
I've also met a lot of great people and some good friends through diving.

Three reasons for me:
1) I love the water
2) I have always wanted to fly
3) I used to want to be an astronaut, but it was too expensive...now I'm a tech diver

hmmm, isn't it about the same cost?

To answer the original question, for me it's the beauty. I Love the ocean, but the things inside it make it a truly amazing place. The colors are "other-worldly" and some of the creatures are too. It's all about the visual beauty, for me, at least in this particular sport.
