In 1964, a buddy and me picked up a couple of tanks and reg's from a garage sell and jumped into a lake in Ohio. Double hose reg's, no inspection, no instructions, no BC's, no depth gauges,no pressure gauges, just J valves for when it got hard to breath !! We survived two seasons of this, max depth about 25FT. About then the air places started wanting to see a cert card to get air. So I dropped out of diving for about 3 decades and then got certified about 6 years ago at age 57.
BC's, single hose reg's, depth gauges, pressure gauges, computers, tables, all new to me. Have since gotten cert's for AOW, Drysuit and Nitrox. A 3 decade surface interval is to much for this great activity.
