About 14, I guess, just playing around with SCUBA and early hookah rigs; finally took a formal course at 24 when shops started getting pissy about air and "C" cards. "Tech?" I guess the first time I saw the term I was nearly 50... took a Nitrox class in '96 I think and started down the formal cave training route about the same time.
But in the midst of all that I spent two decades concentrating on Uncle's business and did essentially nothing to "advance" in Scuba - from about '71 when I bought my own gear - single hose reg, 72 and speargun - there was no upgrade until the Lovely Young Kat started diving in '89, when I bought my first SPG. :) Now I've accumulated so much Scuba junk I can't walk around the garage, but I just can't bear to part with any of it...

NASDS OW in 1971 at age 14 (my first breath was on a Voit DBL hose reg). Made a good number of dives for the next 6 years in S. CA., and then sold all my gear to invest in my new hobby - drugs and alcohol.

Woke up in my mid 30's and found myself married and with two kids, and spent the next few years trying to repair the damage I'd done. Got back into diving after the kids moved out  and started tech training about a year and a half ago.

Started with mask and snorkel (and pingpong ball) at about 7 or 8 in the St Lawrence River. Surplus tank and reg (trained by watching Sea Hunt) in late High School (lucky to be alive today). Navy said I had a healed perforated ear drum and they wouldn't train me (1964). Looooong dry spell. My daughter got OW class for my Dive Wife and I as a 35th anniversary present (I was 61, she claims "39" (Ha!)) last year. We are having a ball....

I absolutely love this question. I started last year at age 50 and although I'm a very strong 50, wondered if I might be starting at an age that put me in the upper tier of "old guys" diving. Sooo thrilled to see all this 54, 57 and even a 66 on this thread.

Working out is part of my daily routine, but because of my new found love for the underwater world, I work even harder trying to stave off that eventual day when I won't be able to carry the load.

Certified OW at 29, but started to really get into things after getting Lasik at age 34. What a difference it makes!! Allowed me to start really enjoying myself.

Started diving at 15. Started my technical classes at 20 with Cavern/Intro Cave. Hoping to go CCR this year at 23.

29... makes me think of all those lost years. :(
