As pointed out in other discussions rules get bent, but when they do it's not a good idea to glorify it on a public forum. Could lead to confusion etc. Might be the right place to apply the "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" rule.

Excellent advise! Save yourself from the armchair quarterback opinions, the wisdom of the (they think they) know it alls, and mostly, if you do really like your dive op and want to make sure they're still able to provide you with their services on your next trip, it's good to know what things to share and what things to keep quiet.

Some things are great post-dive chat topics with those who partook in the activities with you, but they just don't belong on the WWW for anyone and everyone to read about...

Kev, go and enjoy your vacation and make some great memories. Posting stuff here that you know will raise eyebrows and start the bickering going, I'm sure is not how anyone would want to spend their vacation time. :cool2:

And yes I am qualified.
And yes I will likely do it again.
And ya I guess I lost my dm. oops.
But I wont put it on here again. I totally receive Scubawifes advice.
Just like I learned from my dive teachers-if you learn to dive by depending on anyone you stand a good chance of failure. I do admit there are lots of dives where having someone around is needed. Most of you wont know what I mean and I wont explain that.
Also some of you should really stop thinking you know the park rules.
When I lost my dm I went looking for him, what park rule did I break?
MMM what do you think I would be doing anyway-sitting down on coral with a knife chopping it up for the turtles or something, get a life.
Also most of you have no idea of the scuba/spear fishing rules. People that live here told me to shut up about this so I will leave it up to you to find out the truth down here on your own. Go to the park office only for this info. Crap you scuba police crack me up.

Sure had a blast diving today. I'd like to tell what I saw but I'm scared.
Ahh, no I'm not. lol. The coolest things today. Lettuce sea slugs, a pair on green moss. Very nice. Also a huge lobster with the red eggs under its' belly, fanning it to keep them oxygenated. That was neat.
The water was 79f. Not too choppy. Very sunny. Going out on a twilight/night dive at five. Have great dives everyone.
Obviously some of you will be cranky at what I said. Have a nice day though.

that may be true, but "bouncing" to 175 feet while a course is going on is not only risky, but it also sets a terrible example. the instructor is trying to teach a student something, and that something presumably included some discussion of general limits for recreational diving, and now has to deal with the possibility of that student asking "what's all that hooey about 130 feet, when that guy was 40 or 50 feet below me?"

Kevin, are you tech trained? Was that a tech dive? it sounds like you went on your own on a single tank from the same boat as the instructor and the student. Did I misunderstand?

So what's the signal for "Hey DM, go on up without me so I can run my tank down?" I could have used that quite a few times on my last trip, especially at beautiful Columbia Shallows where we both still had a ton of air when the DM started tapping "time" after 75 minutes. We would have dearly loved to ditch out.

Iam sorry Firstdive If I made you upset!!My instructor toldme to come on here and getothers perspective other than his own, he has been diving in Cozumel for 30 years but like I said he wanted me to learn from others as well, the good and the bad. The reason the bounce to 175 sounded funny was I was asking my instructor about deep diving and he said that you should first plan for the dive have an objective and most importantly no your personal limits he also wants me to have at least 30 dives and another evaluation dive with him before he will do aow with me! I am new diver! So I hope this doesnt sound silly but what do you mean by 32? and what were you blowing? remember please be gentle Iam new to all of this I only have 7 dives please be gentle!

Don, this is a surprisingly glib response from you given how much sensible stuff you post on safety-consciousness. I wouldn't expect the DM to have followed Kevin to 175 ft. I would expect an appropriately safety-conscious DM, and a DM who cares about his employer's reputation, to tell Kevin that if he pulls something like that again, the DM won't be going out with Kevin again.

Of course, if the employer thinks this is an acceptable way for folks they take out to dive, than it becomes a little tougher for the DM, who may be forced to put his continued employment at risk by doing the right thing.

I've been wondering if I should answer that, but I'm not hiding the mistake listed on my profile - referenced as a Oops but was really more of a moment of temporary insanity. I've been deeper, not qualified - just narced and lovin' it. I didn't get benched for it, altho I probly should have. I survived, learned, and make sure I don't again.

FD sees his actions differently, whatever - I still don't see the group DM as responsible for more than leading the group. They're not babysitters and we are trained & certified to know how to dive. As far as whether a DM or skipper should bench a diver for such, it really depends on the diver's qualifications & dive plan - but mostly it happens in US waters with US court liabilities. Aside from not being babysitters, the DMs have to feed their families from tips and represent their employers favorably. One might report the actions to the Op ownership and let them deal with the customer as seen fit.

As far as my suggestions, yeah - I try to offer prudent and safe ones, thanks.

Many here poke fun at me, many quote me, some blame me, most have me on ignore maybe - but I try to give suggestions that will enhance safety.

Well, I think I have quite a nice life already. One that allows me to live in Cozumel with my husband of almost 30 years. One that allows me to dive whenever I wish and as much as I feel like. That's more than can be said for some so I am grateful for the life I have.

Hi diving21-I said earlier to ask questions, no problem. I only asked why does it sound funny. As dandydon has succinctly put it several times I am misunderstood a lot here. lol. I, in all fairness do the same. Your journey is starting with scuba and it will be a great experience doing it. My passion for diving boarders insanity. Your instructor has wise words. He is saying go do the fun part now. Time to enjoy, enhance and become a diver. What a joy that is. I almost come to tears now remembering how I felt about this new sport when I got my cert done, I have accomplished a lot but this sport capped my life and I have arrived at life so completed by this sport I cant seem to put the right words to it. Just dive friend.
32 is slang for Nitrox 32. A gas mix with 32% oxygen in the tank. If you google the term Nitrox you will be reading for a while. It is another dive tool but this is used for enhancing dive profiles. Did your instructor not talk about terms like Nitrox, or nitrox 32, or nitrox 36, the more common blends of nitrox for recreational diving. good question.
The term 'what where you blowing' cracks me up. lol. uh bubbles dude. another slang term for diving. hahahaha. that's a great question though, seriously.
If you are ever on Coz, or anywhere else, maybe we could dive together, if you still have a newer dive status at that time, it would be an honor to help you out any way I can. I truly enjoy taking divers with low experience out and playing in the water. I would never take you or anyone to a dive that is beyond your level. My wife is coming down soon, she is finishing her certification. I am so proud of her. I cant wait to play in the water with her. We will always be doing less than sixty feet. Just fine with me. She will never dive as much as I, that's when I can go do my style of dive. She will never night dive, cave dive or go deep. But she will be in the water with me and we will see the creation of life that is the most amazing thing on earth to me right now, the ocean!!!!!!!

Oh oh watch out the coz park board police will cook you if you post a question like this, your messing with their heads. They wont be sure if your joking or serious and well you'll be chum. lol. The rules lady, the rules.
I agree Columbia shallows is just amazing, somehow I go deaf underwater when the one hour mark goes by and I have a ton of gas left. lol.
