Has anyone been on a whale shark excursion this year? If so can you post a brief report? I will be on the island at the end of the month and I am considering the adventure. I am looking at catching the 5am ferry and meeting w/a dive op and then over to Holbox. Any information is mucho appreciated!!

Thanks-
Amber

Not first hand, but my brother did this through DP just last week....5am ferry, van to Chiquila, boat to Holbox, boat to whale sharks. I stayed and dove Coz. Anyways, he said there were several boats out and several sharks to swim with. In fact, he was swimming with one and thought his lady was nudging him for his attention....turned out to be another whale shark as he turned around. Amazing experience from the sounds of it.

Did this two years ago and it was one of the most intense experiences of my adult life. Can't recommend it enough, and it seems the whale sharks are there right now.

Alohagal posted a great report on the Mexico board. From what I've read on scubaboard and heard elsewhere, you really don't have to go all the way out to Holbox this year. The whalesharks this year seem to have moved a bit further east and south. The trips out of Isla Mujeres and Punta Sam are getting great reviews, lots of whalesharks and even some mantas.

(In Mexico you can only snorkel with the whalesharks, no diving. You can dive with then in Belize when they migrate through the Gladden Spit area in I believe March/April)

There was one sighted off Cozumel a couple of weeks ago.
Very cool! We had one on a dive a couple years ago off Akumal. Totally out of place for them and out of season... it was mid-December. Always a treat to see the unexpected on a dive.

OK I will look into the other trips, and see if the sharks are still be sighted. That is great. I really want to see one. It is funny you mention Belize. I was there this past March, full moon, and the cubera snapper were spawning. We went diving at the Gladden Spit area, on a whale shark dive. They had not migrated to the area yet, so no luck for us. Belize is very hit or miss when it comes to diving with the whale sharks, Mexico seems to be statistically better for sightings. Hopefully I get to swim with one!

thanks-
Amber

We're heading down a week from Monday and we're giving serious thought to doing a one day excursion from CZM to Isla Mujeras or Holobox to do the whale shark thing. I'm also interested in any info anyone might have on operators that offer this. We're hoping to squeeze the whole trip into one day, starting with the early ferry and getting us back by the last one that night.

Well you only have Sunday to do that since you are leaving on a Monday. I am starting to consider to do the whaleshark trip myself.

Right now we're not booked for diving on Wednesday but the shop told us we can move things around a little if we want. This will be Shirley's first trip to the island so we originally left one day open in the middle to just relax and do some sight seeing. We need to talk to our dive shops and see if they have a recommended tour operator. It'd be a lot of fun to get a group together!

I know scubamau is putting together a whaleshark trip for kev, but do not know any details. I sent an email to scubamau the other day, but have not received a reply yet.
