In 1984-85 I was the radio officer/electronics technician on RV Hero working in Antarctica.
Whale encounters were very common, especially as much of the research being done was on krill and the humpbacks would feed on the krill.
Humpback whales are natural hams and will play and pose for the photographers as long as the ship was still or slow. They would play a game to try and get the people to be on the wrong side of the ship when they would surface. With whales surfacing all around for hours on end you get very familiar with the smell (stench) of whale breath.
During one such session a very large male (named Pete) was longside just as someone flushed the midships head (toilet). The flush went right into the face of the whale who instantly dived and swam away. About 5 minutes later he cam back to the same place, lifted his tail high out of the water and sprayed a large 'fecal plume' all over the side of the ship. It was BAD, I mean REALLY BAD! We broke out firehoses to wash down the ship and cleared up the mess
Trust me, you DON'T want to be on the receiving end of a 'fecal plume' from a whale.
