This might be a silly question but...

When you see a two piece wetsuit that says it is 3mm thick are both pieces 3mm thick so you are actually getting 6mm in the core areas?

:newbie: It's my first winter diving.

Yes, each piece should be 3 mm so wherever you have two layers you will have 6 mm. However, some suits are 3/2 meaning 3 mm in torso and 2 mm in limbs. Look for suits with a slick or metallic lining, these are often easier to slide into. A good fit is critical-make sure you try them on. And ask around to see what thickness other people are wearing in your area. My suggestion if you want to go with a two-piece is to get a fullsuit with a sleeveless core warmer (ie Henderson Goldcore or Hyperstretch) which is more versatile than a Farmer John/Jane. You can use the fullsuit by itself when it's warmer and add the core warmer if it's cold. And if it's really warm like tropical diving you can use the core warmer by itself. I have a 3 mm Goldcore jumpsuit and a Titanium hyperstretch core warmer and it works well.

Uhmmm not always. I have a 7mm wetsuit and a vest of 5mm. That vest is made for that suit.

Thank you for the information. :D

Will the tag tell me if the two pieces are different thickness?

Who knows! I've found that my vest was 5mm just after I've read your question. I thought it was 7mm but looking the online catalogue I've found that it was 5mm, go figure! :) I guess why I'm getting a little cold in the 13ºC (55.4ºF) waters where I've been diving lately... :)

Perhaps you can check the thickness in the online catalogue of the maker just to be sure.

What kind of water temp are we looking at? Maybe a full 5 or 7mil jumpsuit would be better. Sure would be more comfortable IMO. Either way, Gold Core is definately the way to go.
I am a total warm water whimp...I admit it. This weekend I did 6 dives: 2 on Sat, 4 on Sunday water temps varied from 74-77. I had on a 3mm full with a 3mm shorty over it and a hood(i don't know how thick I think 1mm). I got chilled but not as cold as I have on some dives. But if the temp continues to drop I will need another suit.

Wow! 74-77...in my dreams. We were excited this weekend because the water was a balmy 54 in Monterey!
