I recently returned from a trip to Curacao. On the last day I dove Watamula and Mushroom Forest with a charming couple, Peter and Bridgit, with British accents. I was in awe of the splendid coral formations, particularly with Watamula. Both Peter and Bridgit said they preferred the reef in the Dominican Replublic. I, of course, replied 'You must mean Dominica'. No, Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic, was the response. I have never even considered this area as a potential dive destination. Am I missing something? Can anyone provide comparative experiences with Curacao and the Puerto Plata area? Should I put the Dominican Republic on my 'To Do' list.

Not sure it should be on a "To Do" list, but it might make the "I-don't-have-to-avoid" list.

I'll let you know. I have a trip planned to the La Romana area leaving May 3rd. We are staying at an all-inclusive near Bayahibe (Oasis Canoa). I couldn't pass as it was fairly cheap, for an all-inclusive, through CheapCaribbean.com.

That's exactly what I was thinking. When I check the vacation sell-offs, some of the cheapest all-inclusives are to the Dominican. Sometimes I see them off-season for as little as $650 taxes included. That is one cheap dive trip even if I drop another $200-250. Thanks for the reply, I look forward to a trip report .
