There is not much of a possibility of melting the skirt unless you are using a blow-torch or leave the grill lighter flame on the silicone for like 2 minutes. Silicone is pretty tough stuff, and even if you get the flame on in momentarily, it will not melt. I know because I did it today. If you have an old mask strap laying around, put a lighter on that and see that silicone is pretty tough.

How do you flame your mask without melting the skirt? Inquiring minds want to know as I brought mask #4 home last night in my perpetual search for one that doesn't leak (at least not that much). Thank goodness DRIS has a good return policy.

Huh. All I have is a BBQ lighter (which I use for lighting candles since I burn myself with a regular lighter).

@Marie13 that is the one I use the bbq lighter, but if you are planning a mask possible return you probably should make sure it fits before burning. They probably will not take a returned mask that has been burned.

@Chip Elliott We just use the shampoo right out of the bottle smear it around and rinse before going in from boats or rinse in water (shore dives). Like @tbzep said you can even let it dry in the mask for hours before you rinse. The rinse water will make it soft again and easy to rinse out.

Baby shampoo won't help at all (or very little) if the glass has the "new" coating on it. I'm not sure exactly what the coating is, but burning it off is EXTREMELY helpful and effective. I generally will clean a mask really well with dawn or something and include the entire internal mask skirt about every month or so. Then on the boat, I use diluted baby shampoo or commercial defog or often spit will work fine, but the mask MUST first be prepared and cleaned.

Eh, I'll just scrub it then. Didn't even think about that.

DD Chip already burned it.

I don't dilute the baby shampoo. I just put a drop or two in and smear it all over and it doesn't drip or run out. Undiluted doesn't spill as easily if you knock the bottle over. I keep mine in a small bottle with about 1/8" diameter opening so it takes a while for it to ooze out.

No truer words have been spoken on this subject..
