Soggy:
I love to go for lobster. We do it as a team, though. And there is plenty of DIR video out there....like in every GUE class...it's one of the main pedagogical techniques used.

I find video a real easy way to bore the heck out of a buddy. I understand (and have watch) the DIR training video. But have you ever done wildlife video as as team? If you can do it, more power to yah.

Lobster. I've never seen a team go for lobster. You have to have some serious vis.

But then, I think I'm hijacking this thread, and didn't intend to.

Where were we? You should not wear weight belts. ....

O-ring,

How may DIR buddies are you bring to the Northern Passific? They may not allow those long hoses aboard. Do you know if they have a hang bar?

There are 4 of us on the boat..two teams of two. Our team will be shooting video.

If they don't allow long hoses on the boat I won't dive. I can't imagine any operation in this day and age being that ignorant, but if they are, that's definite information I want before getting on the boat. If I know they have a ridiculous rule like that, I know they have no chance of running a squared away boat and would probably run me over on deco anyway.

I do not know if they have a hang bar, but I don't particularly need one either. I can use the anchorline or whatever method they use up there.

Take a joke dude.

LOL..I didn't know you were kidding!

See you there. I'll be the stroke in the horse collar and long hose.
Oh great...you're on the boat too?

Man this thread sure went off on a tangent :) Anyway I figured out what I'm gonna do. I'm going to put my Halcyon ACB 12 (6lbs per side version) on some Halcyon Webbing with a nice Dive Rite Buckle. A real nice custom weight belt and although I'll most likely never need to ditch, if for some bizare reason I had to I can just pull out the pockets. It doesnt matter if the weight belt is on the inside or outside with this configuration. Don't know if it's DIR but it looks good on paper. :)

Your thoughts?

CALI68,

I used to have the ACBs, but I figured it was not worth lugging them around. Also, with my small waist, they tend to just get in the way, so I got rid of them. I went back to just two-solid 3 pounders on a nylon webbing with a stainless steel buckle. I had the same reservations as you did when I first dove with them with my backplate. I put the weight belt on and then I don my gear. If you are unsure of it, practice in a pool. After several dives, I became so proficient with unbuckling my BP harness belt that it became second nature. Everytime I dive, I pull on my harness belt buckle to unbuckle it and then locks it again and mentally run through the procedures in my head, just in case. The poster who said that the only time you will ditch your weight is on the surface is quite right. Ditching your weight at 90' will be a disaster. Ditching your weight at 30' will be a bigger disaster since the biggest pressure change is at 33'. Just think it through the procedures in your head and practice it in the pool a few times and you will be proficient in it in no time. There is nothing wrong in using the ACBs if they make you feel safer. To be honest, in my 7 short years of diving, I haven't ditched a single weight. I have laccidentally lost weights during dives, caused by malfunctioning velcros and cracked plastic belt buckles and I have seen people loose weights U/W and on the surface due to the same reasons, but I have not intentionally dropped weights IOT surface. As a matter of fact, I dive LP PST 80s with an aluminum BP with no weights. I guess I can ditch my canister light and my Gates Housing, but that would be expensive!!!
