If you are going to be playing the snow you will want the equivalent of snow pants. If you have some nylon shell running pants sweats and the thermal undies you should do well in that regard without buying snowsuits for limited use.
Coming from warm weather the kids and maybe even yourself may not have much staying power in the cold anyway. The natives go though a "hardening" process in the fall that eases us into winter. 40F seemed cold a month ago, it's OK now and will seem heavenly in a month.
I admire what you are doing with the kids. Time spent and new horizons explored. I live on the coast of Maine and have been here my whole life. I used to make time for a daybreak walk on the beach after an all nighter once each summer. Invariably there would be families with sleepy eyed children standing in the beach watching the sunrise come up over the Atlantic. I learned that many came from inland regions where there was no ocean and surely no ocean sunrise. This was something special and memorable. I hope the visit to winter is the same for all of you.
If you ever make it to Maine I'll show you my snowblower collection and even let you try one!
Have fun,
Pete
