Thanks Leesa, that's one cool fish, and nice shot!

So now here's the tricky question, how the Ell do you say...

humuhumunukunukuapua'a :11doh:

And does it mean anything? Maybe Pig fish that tastes really great in pan?

Now class...repeat after me:

who moo who moo new koo new koo AH poo AH AH

lol

it means "nose like pig" because it is said to grunt like a pig when it's taken out of the water (I haven't heard that yet), :D

In general, when trying to pronounce Hawaiian words, look for patterns that are doubled up. A lot of those long words are simpler than they appear at first glance.

2 "Hoomoo"s
2 "Nookoo"s
1 "Apoo"
2 "Ah"s

Old Thread, New Comment:

Roger made the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a grunt like a pig for me on our night dive Saturday night. It was asleep in a little hole and he bugged it and it grunted- very odd and I didn't realise that's what I was hearing until we got back to the boat and he told me. Sounded like he was banging on the underside of the little hole the fish was in- dull thud sound.

I wonder what else has a statute of limitations on it...

And if anyone is interested (and I'm sure you can find them elsewhere and probably online) I was at a coffee shop in Kailui and saw this fantastic (and, of course, overpriced) deck of Go Fish cards with the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, Uhu-uliuli, Kihikihi, Lauwiliwilinukunuku'oi'oi, Ala'ihi, Paku'iku'i, Hinalea Lauwili, Kokala, Puhi Kapa, Kikakapu, Lau'ipala, Nohu, and th Oili'uwi'wui. I wish I'd found them before my dives with Oahu Scuba Divers... it would have helped with my fish identification "skills." As it was, Lisa had to tell me what I had seen- I had no idea! I can now identify the state fish (my fingers are tired so I cheated), the saddle wrasse and the moorish idol (after buying the picture from the Lisa's Pics collection!)- all of which are on the cards!

The box says www.cardsharkpress.com (808) 348-8652 copyright 2005 Elaine de Man.

They're fantastic- I paid $8... the same price I paid for the waterproof Uno cards.
