La Paz, Mexico—on the Baja California peninsula—is an incredible destination for marine life lovers, especially divers and snorkelers. Located within the Sea of Cortez (often called “the world’s aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau), it offers an amazing variety of sea creatures. Here's a list of marine life you might encounter there, depending on the season and dive site:
Here are some of the MANY possibilities awaiting in La Paz
- Whale Sharks (Oct–Apr) – Snorkeling with them is a must-do in La Paz!
- Humpback Whales (Dec–Apr) – Often seen breaching during boat trips.
- Gray Whales (Jan–Mar) – Especially in nearby Magdalena Bay.
- Blue Whales (Feb–Apr) – Occasionally spotted in deeper waters.
- Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks – Especially at El Bajo seamounts.
- Silky Sharks – Seen offshore in deeper dive sites.
- Mobula Rays (May–July) – Massive schools leap out of the water.
- Manta Rays – Sometimes around cleaning stations near El Bajo.
- Eagle Rays
- Giant Pacific Mantas – Less common but a real treat.
- Dolphins – Common, especially bottlenose and spinner dolphins.
- California Sea Lions – Playful and abundant around Los Islotes.
- King Angelfish
- Cortez Rainbow Wrasse
- Panamic Sergeant Major
- Mexican Hogfish
- Puffers, parrotfish, and groupers
- Snappers, jacks, and barracudas
