H2Andy:
hey, i thought of a new signature, inspired by this thread
(see below)

... and now that my question has been answered quite
amply by many (THANK YOU!!), i will have to try not to ask questions without thinking
first!

Next time dweeb starts riding you hard I will try and restart that diving war graves thread. That should keep him too busy to bother you. :eyebrow:

ah... well... er...

thanks?

:eyebrow:

I can't believe so many people spent so much time on this subject.

SmokeAire:
It's a sad state of affairs that on this forum, BASIC, that anyone must endure the comments from the egotistic and self rightous gods gift to diving ( why aren't ya'll WALKING on water and turning water into whine(not a misspelling) and did you come out of your mothers womb with tanks on?!
Oh and if they are the apitamy of diving what are they doing lurking and degenerating on a BASIC forum?
We don't need arrogant replies.

No, it's a sad state of affairs when people aren't shocked that someone can get a diving certification without understanding the concept in question.

Who claimed to be the do all end all of diving?
No one, that's who.

The very POINT is that the lowliest, most novice of divers should know this concept.

No one is expected to jump out of their mother's womb ready to dive, but someone with an OW card should reasonably be accountable for the basic fundamentals of the prerequisite course.

If you call this arrogance, I shudder to think what you'd say if I told you I expect high school graduates to be able to read.

Remember, the question wasn't asked by someone thinking about becoming a diver.

It's an even sadder day when YOU discourage people from asking basic questions because YOU feel you have to make some point about diving instruction or whatever.

Somehow I doubt that Andy will feel nearly as open about asking any further questions due to your HARSH treatment of his ignorance or confusion (which ever it was). That is a crime! Instead of encouraging learning you have SQUASHED it. I have no idea if it was your pride, arrogance, impatience, or stupidity that caused you to attack an honest question by an honest seeker. All I know is that abusing people who ask sincere questions, by either calling them a "troll" or by trying to publically humiliate them is COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. It's NOT what the board was designed for. Back off! There is NO possible reasoning that can justify this.

I would suggest to all who seek to belittle or humiliate others on this board that they reaquaint themselves with the first paragraph of the TOS. If a question is beneath you , then just move on. It's a big board and you really could spend time elsewhere rather than stroking your ego by acosting others. I would also suggest that whoever is perfect among you should cast the first stone. Of course, only the truly arrogant would deign to do so.

Well said!

For those of you who don't know Andy - he's an excellent diver and an intelligent individual. Nothing wrong at all with musing over this question. Sometimes the things that seem so apparent are really quite subtle.

Back in undergraduate chemistry, I thought I knew all there was to know about Dalton's Law and wondered what the big deal was about it. Now I realize so many more of it's applications, and I've just scraped the surface!

Hang in there, Andy! Keep the good questions and thoughts coming!

i personally don't care about the comments made as to my question

however, Pete and Grier are absolutely right that we want a board where new
divers can ask their questions and learn and not be made to feel like they are
stupid or dumb for asking.

i shudder to think what a new diver reading this thread might think. they'll probably
never ask a question for fear of it being a "dumb question."

anyways... i find that people that "slam" others for asking questions do it in
order to showcase how smart they are, and how much they know, and not because
they care at all about knowledge or diving or (god forbid) the generous exchange of
knowledge from more experienced divers to lesser experienced divers.

usually, these people also have to compensate for something in their lives

(usually little weenies :eyebrow:)

This is the incredible morphing thread that will not die! lol...

dude you posted!!!
