I've had console gauges and computers for most of my dives, but I only look at the SPG (all rental equipment)
I carry a wrist mount computer and a compass, and look at those conveniently (and often) throughout my dive as my arms are generally in front of me.
Now those wrist mounts I have modified by taking off the wrist straps, and replacing them with bungee. It makes putting them on and off easy, they stretch over my exposure (rash guard to thick wetsuits) with no adjustments. (**When I get my dry suit, they're gonna change to include a push stopper like on/from fin mesh bags. A total whopping $2 in material to make them even more easier to use with all of my exposure suits**)
I also tend to rotate them to the inside side of my wrist, opposed to 'on top' like a normal watch. That way I can see them without moving anything. Knowing my approximate SAC and my depths, I check my SPG every few minutes/big landmark to double check that nothing is weird going on, and for reference for the return trip back to the anchor line.
