I have a series of business trips down to Wareham, MA including some overnighters.

Is there any convenient evening shore diving down there? I don't need a lot of drama, a nice rocky cove suits me fine. I see lots of beaches but never really hear about the area here in the forum.

I can see the trips extending to June so if there is anything worthwhile and anyone is interested in buddying with a tourist let me know.

Cape Cod and most of the South Shore of MA are big sand bars. However, there's a nice little dive site very close to Wareham. Sandwich Town Beach(STB) is just off 6A on the Cape side of the canal. I don't think it's a 15 minute drive from Wareham(depending on traffic over the Bourne bridge). Best dive is at high tide. Otherwise, you'd need a shovel to get deeper than 20 fsw. There's a public rest room(in season) and parking is abundant and free after($10 before) 5pm during the summer. They don't charge during the off season. Gear up at your car and walk over the dunes. IMHO, the best dive is not directly in front of the bathhouse where most people dive. Try a dive to either side of that area, but be cognizant of the current running toward the canal. I don't think you'll end up in the shipping lanes, but if you forget about it, you might be walking along the beach for a while to get back to your car.

Other options might be Hathaway Pond(Barnstable), Corporation Beach(Dennis) or Horizons(Sandwich-just down the street from STB). If you do a google search of Sandwich Town Beach, you'd come up with plenty of diving-related hits and driving directions.

I live less than 1 hour from STB, so PM me if you decide to go.

This might be a convenient dive shop if you do dive and end up needing fills or what not.
Buzzards Bay Dive Center as well as more local info, they are the closest to Wareham I believe. But if you do go to STB you will pass these guys on your way. They are 5 min from beach. Aqua Center

Also Garbage beach in Woods Hole. One of the few shore dives on cape cod with any depth. It gets down to almost 70', but the best part do dive is around 35' deep.

Let me know if you want someone to dive with at any of these sites. I live about 15-20 minutes from Wareham, 2 minutes from garbage beach, and 30 minutes from Sandwich town beach.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'll let you know if the logistics work out.

Oops, I forgot that one. Never been there...maybe it's the name.;)

Pete,

I think Buzzards Bay Dive runs night dives at Sandwich Town Beach weekly. Nice group of folks. I don't know when they start doing them, but we went with them last year for our first night dives and it was a really nice! I live 15 mins from Wareham and have a house in Onset as well...

Let us know your schedule, my GF and I might be inclined to join you guys!

A couple weeks from now it will be flooded with squid. Makes for a great night dive.

What kind? I've never seen any around here...except as fried calamari.:D
