i should know what the answer to this question should be but i will ask anyway

do you think UNTRAINED people shoule do routine maintance, service and VIP's on their own tanks?

by this i mean
remove the valve
look for rust and aluminum oxide
remove rust and aluminum oxide
02 clean tank and valve
justify tank fit for service
reinstall valve and wait till next VIP and hydro

I don't think untrained people should work on any diving equipment. Self trained is another story. See these two sites for good information on inspecting scuba cylinders:

Catalina has a good site: Catalina Cylinders <http://www.catalinacylinders.com/> then click on Tech Support and have a good look around, they have info neck inspection, folds, cracks, etc.

Also see this document:

Also, do a search re: O2 cleaning valves and tanks.

Quick answer is NO.

If you do service your own tank, who is going to put the new VIP sticker on it, and what shop will fill it ?
I do my own service, cleaning and VIP, but I also fill my own tanks.
I have taken the class , have the cert., purchased the tools to do the job and know what I am doing when it comes valve repairs.

damn, someone agrees with me in a DIY thread, and everyone in the tanks, valves, and bands thinks i am crazy for saying they cant work on their tanks

Jbres didn't say you couldn't work on your own tanks. He said you can't work on your own tanks if you don't have the right equipment, training, and experience. But then, isn't this the key to everything in life? ;-)

no i dont . HOWEVER if you can do it then you have the skills that traiing provides. and all is well. there is a book you can get from psi that is good about inspection. these people are really really anal about inspections. o2 cleaning on the other hand is something that is better suited to be learned from someone experienced. your only holdback will be getting vis stickers. no cert no stickers. you can make your own though. though i dont foster this.

let me know.. pm me if you need info
