Hi Everyone!

My name is Danny, I'm an instructor from the other coast, and I'll be visiting the San Diego area next week. I'm looking to do a bunch of dives while I'm visiting. I'll have my own gear sans tanks and I'm just looking to see what San Diego diving has to offer. Either beach or boat doesn't matter to me.

Anyone want to show me around?

I'm considering doing the 3 tank dive on either the oil rigs or wrecks or the coronado islands. which would be more convenient for renting tanks? I haven't decided if I'm diving sidemount or just going to use my double hose open water setup.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. You can find Good Life Divers on facebook if you want to see what I'm up to and my resume. Thanks everyone!

Hi ffdiver, I'm in the same position - coming to San Diego and bringing my gear to squeeze in 2 days for diving next week (March 11 and 12). I ended up signing on for 2 boat trips on the Humboldt (Waterhorse Charters). Friday is Coronados (2tank) and Saturday the wreck/kelp 3-tank trip (chartered byPowerScuba, a loosely grouped club that seems very welcoming.) I'm sure some locals will mention shore diving as a great option, but with only two days to dive I didn't want to risk losing out due to rough surf, etc.
Maybe I'll see you on Friday or Saturday on the Humboldt.

Cheers!

Here are some links folks gave me I found helpful:

Big list of dive boats:
California Dive Boats : The Official Page

Waterhorse charters (boat is the Humboldt)
San Diego SCUBA Diving, Charter Boat Dives. Dive Trips

PowerScuba's site (have to register with MeetUp.com, but that was painless enough):

Very good overall site for San Diego diving:

...(chartered by Power Scuba, a loosely grouped club that seems very welcoming.)...

Why loosely grouped? Power Scuba is a 501(c)(3) charitable org incorporated in the state of Ca. Has a Board of Directors, a full (volunteer) Staff, and 3,200 members. Probably more tightly knit than any other "club" in the nation.

Though, if it 'appears' we have no command structure, perhaps that's a good thing. :-)

I'm signing up for the Friday trip today and already booked the Saturday trip. I may go out Sunday morning too.

I was really looking forward to doing some shore diving but if it doesn't work out then what are you going to do.

Whats the water temp at depth that I'll be looking at?

This time of year it's probably somewhere between 55ºF-63ºF. We just had some rains, and it's advisable to stay out of the water 72hrs (definitely if entering from shore, which might be impossible due to ~8' surf) after the fact. If you're far off shore on a boat, you should be OK.

I guess I didn't phrase that well. No offense intended. From what I gathered it seems to be a very well-run group. My message for the original poster was that PowerScuba appears to be very open to new and transient members visiting SoCal for a brief time. I'm really looking forward to diving with PowerScuba members on Saturday. I'll see you on the boats, too, ffdiver.
