I got a friend who told me he uses vinegar mixed with some water to spray on his regs after he breaks them down to clean them. Anyone ever heard of this method? He said that the vinegar eats up all the crud and the salt and sand stuck in the regs.

I have never heard of this. Not sure if it would harm anything...but I would think that the acetic acid (vinegar) would to a certain extent remove any "crud". I always use plenty of fresh H2O and have never had a problem. You may be doing some different diving than me though. Good luck. I'm sure someone will come along and offer more detailed info.

Yes it works very well, it is a mild acid. (it is not going to eat up the salt and sand but will displace it and allow you to rinse everything out)

citric acid is also a good cleaner, you can buy it in powder form and mix it.

Both these solutions will work fine in a ultrasonic cleaner also.

After cleaning the part you can did it in a water and baking soda solution to nutralize the acid...then a quick fresh water rinse

Or you can use a 50/50 mix of Lysol toilet bowl cleaner (the blue stuff) and water. Soak for two minutes and rinse with fresh hot water. It will remove all the salt water corrosion and bacteria.

Yes, vinegar is commonly used in cleaning regs.

Another common cleaner is simple green.

Yup,
Even Vance Harlow suggests that in his book "Scuba Regulator Maintenance and Repairs."

We use Simple Green in an ultrasonic cleaner. It works very well.

What is simple green? A question from a simple guy....;) :out:

A cleaner sold most places...supermarkets,Walmarts, ect...
Sold in a clear bottle with your never guess this...a green liquid.
Look by the household cleaners.
