I don't know about going through a hole into a lake, but diving around icebergs in the Arctic or Antarctic sounds pretty cool. I'd be great to see penguins underwater.

On the other hand...maybe I'll just go to Sea Life Park....

I used to really enjoy ice diving and teaching ice diving but over the years fewer and fewer people wanted to go or even learn. I only go now when someone wants me to bring a snowmobile up.
In the right conditions it's a truley amazing dive.

Inspired by another thread, what best describes your views on ice diving?

Cold. :frosty:

I've ice-dived on two occasions and found the teamwork and safety measures pretty interesting. Unfortunately, vis was only average, perhaps 20 to 30' when I went.

I found it was a lot of work for a single dive, especially one shortened by the surface support guys when they got cold after 40 minutes in the frigid wind.... The divers were still nice and warm in the 37-degree water since we had on plenty of extra insulation.... :D

Once a year would be enough for me, unless there was something to make it more interesting or profitable, like a vehicle recovery or something. I'd love to tag along with a friend of mine who is experienced with such recoveries! :)

Ice diving is awesome! Superior vis, no currents and an awesome cloudshaped ice-sealing (if done in a lake or mine-area)

But ice diving as any other diving activity should be done with great responsibility. One line-commander per divepair or one line-commander and only one divepair in the water at once.

Ice diving is something you should do if you ever get the chance! You'r welcome to visit sweden anytime during the winter tp experience it!

Best regards.

Yeah, we like it here in Ontario too. Can't wait to do it again. Rhone, you need to add "do it occasionally"

Ice Diving = something every diver should try.

My LDS is running a course in February & I'm contempplating taking it. It's not something you'd do every weekend in winter but a couple of time every winter would probably be a riot!

Fresh water fish = boring. Fresh water fish under ice = cold and boring.

I suppose if I were not in TX it might be different - but I doubt it.
