Interesting, sad, article. Interestingly enough I watched a series on netflix (Ocean Misterys with Jeff Corwinn) last night and episode one actually talks about the very same problem. Worth watching!
 
All animals go through a similar cycles with mild winters and overpopulation the land and sea can only support so much life. It is the Circle of Life.
 
No question this is sad, but it is also a part of natural cycles. Every warm water episode I've experienced over the last 50 years here in SoCal has had die-offs of pinnipeds due to the inability of oceanic resources to provide enough food for the cows to produce adequate milk or enough food for the young weaned ones who can't dive very deep. It is sad, but it is nature. Just as predators will take soft cuddly prey.
