. . . Just hope I don't get tarred and feathered if I go a route other than Rec Wing/Dive Rite after everyone's fantastic imput and advice. My 54th Birthday is coming up on Feb. lst, so I should have chosen something by then.

You asked great questions and got a load of informed answers. If you now choose to buy some other item, it will at least be a well informed choice.

In my experience, a wing is pretty much a wing, so you should end up happy with whatever you choose.

Have fun,

theskull,
Thanks! I hope that would be the general consensus. I'm just glad that this thread will be of help to lots of other folks even if I do choose to go with something other than a Rec Wing in the end.

There have been so many pro doughnut threads it's nice that there's such a pro-Rec Wing thread now, too! Balance, like bouyancy is everything!

I appreciate your response t.s. :14:

OK, get the tar ready....I've decided at long last and with much (obvious) torment, to go with an Oxycheq Signature 45 doughnut wing and DSS backplate with Hog. harness.

The deciding factors were:
l.Anecdotal info. provided kindly by Doc Intrepid, Rick M., and MSilvia on this thread.

2. The wonderful offer by another board member to set me up, mentor me a bit with the same rig that he presently dives. This was way too good of an opportunity to say no to! He has owned and dived both the Dive Rite Rec Wing rig and the Oxy/DSS rig and provided anecdodtal direct comparison between both systems and my intended use. Just for the record, he was also an enthusiastic Rec Wing user in the past as many of you may already know...

3. I've decided to be honest with myself that doubles diving is very likely a long way off in the future for me and I should optimize my choice for single tank diving for now. Man, the "compromise" doubles/singles use of the Rec Wing IS a tempting design feature and I can't help admire its inherent cleverness and economy.

4. I do feel guilty towards my Dive Rite offer/ LDS guy as he spent quality time with me and I will be absolutely certain to spend an equivalent amount of money with him with my next (more easily decided upon) purchases. I ALWAYS do right by those who've been kind/understanding to/with me.

I ended up ordering through Jakub at golemgear.com I should receive my rig next Wed. or so very near my Birthday which would be just about a perfect thing!

Thank you SO much everyone. I know this thread is "not for nothin" and will persuade many to purchase transplate/Rec Wing systems for themselves because of your detailed and personal accounts using that gear.

I really can't thank you enough for taking your valuable time to help me evaluate which rig would ultimately be the right choice for myself -at this point in time anyway.

I hope I can do the same for you all as I gain more experience. I am grateful to you.

VERY sincerely, Jim T.

The offer of a mentor to help you set it up and dive it is certainly a great value to you.

Just be very careful if the mentor is who I suspect it is. That dude is such a good diver and mentor that he will make a great diver of you--and then you'll REALLY end up spending some bucks on additional dive gear as you get into more involved diving.

Enjoy,

Thanks t.s.,
Yes it probably is who you suspect it is! He sure is a nice guy! I'm looking forward to learning from him. Won't get the chance until mid Feb. though...
You've been great too, thanks!
Jim

I caught this thread late as I'm essentially in the exact same position as Jim T. was although I would anticipate I will be diving twin 95s in cold water with dry suit 90% of the time in another year or so once I get more into diving. I've read these threads a lot and I think my strategy may be to pick up a used singles wing like a Halcyon Pioneer 36# to take to the Caribbean and use for singles diving back at home in the Northwest and then when I get more serious get a good double bladder 60# or so wing for twins. I am seriously considering the DR Rec Wing as diving has come naturally to me so I'm sure it would work fine for both singles and doubles but I think by the time I'm doing doubles I'll be pretty serious about my equipment and will want to spend a little extra to have a good setup. Sound good?

I own both the DR Rec and Travel wings. I find the oval travel wing much easier to vent than the Rec wing. HOWEVER, I am a videographer who must frequently "fully" vent my wing in order to stay stationary on the bottom to film. For normal diving I don't think it matters near as much.
