Another diving death off Porkkala Peninsula | Yle Uutiset | yle.fi
A Vantaa native in his mid-40s died in a diving accident off the Porkkala Peninsula on Sunday. Rescuers were able to pull him to the surface, but he died from his injuries.
West Uusimaa police say he was attaching buoys at a depth of about 30 metres at a shipwreck near the island of Juktenskobben, when he became entangled in ropes. His diving partner, who was on the surface, dove to help him but was unable to free him.
When his air ran out, the diver had to make an emergency ascent. As a result he is being treated in a pressure chamber, the police said in a statement.
Rescue Services received the distress call around 11 am. Taking part in the rescue effort were four vessels from the Coast Guard and Rescue Services and two helicopters. Police are investigating the accident.
The Porkkala Peninsula, some 40 kilometres west of Helsinki is a popular but potentially dangerous place for diving. A man died while diving off Porkkala last November, and another in August 2011.
The wreck was discovered in 1999. Divers have found artefacts including an eighteenth-century Russian coin at the site.
