Just a final semi-related question. Can shops actually replace the entire valve with a convertible valve?

Not usually in this context.

The DIN HP only cylinders are usually PST product that may be private branded such as Genesis, US Divers etc. They were produced with a 7/8 fine thread neck that requires a unique valve and it is DIN. These cylinders were rated at 3500 PSI. These are the HP steels most commonly seen for sale. They are great buys but commit you to DIN.

About a decade ago the product was revamped and the pressure dropped a few atmospheres to 3442. This was the PST E series. Worthington followed with their X series product. Getting below 3500 PSI opened the door to yoke connections and the convertible valve was a match made in gear heaven. These cylinders use the common 3/4 NPS thread. From what I have seen the 3442 PSI product has been pretty standard with the convertible valve.

There are said to be some rogue yoke/convertible valves for the 3500 PSI cylinders but they are dubious at best and may raise the eyebrow of a sharp air fill provider.

Yeah, those were the tanks I got. I think both US Divers. But then I got great deals and hydro was up-to-date. They passed the vis. It was totally worth getting a DIN first stage (I also got a DIN to yoke converter for "regular" tanks). Yay for 3500 PSI!!!
