Uwatec Smart Pro Vs. Aladin Pro Ultra

What are the differences/pros and cons between these two units. I am looking for my first computer and I just got nitrox certified, I also want something that can grow with me. It looks like the Pro Ultra is in the $300 range (per lp), but I haven't been able to find any pricing on the smart pro...

Just purchased my Smart Pro from a local diveshop.

These are the difference they quoted,

1. Smart Pro having a more matured decompression algorithm (questionable answer)

2. Smart Pro is Infra-red activated, thus you will able to transfer your data to the Smart Trak Software (Windows Edition only (95, 98, NT, XP) Come with it and later version downloadable ) directly, if your computer has a infra-red (IrDA) reader. (could be bought at US$20).

Ultra-Pro required a Memomouse to transfer data to Computer. Another cost if you wish to purchase the Memomouse. (about another >US $100)

3. Smart Pro Dive depth calculation up to 120m, Ultra-pro upto 99m (Not that all of us do Tec Diving, of course)

4. Smart Pro Drive keep back log of 99 (assuming upto 1 hour per dive) dives, Ultra-Pro keep backlog of 19 dives (37 dives thru memomouse transfer to Computer).

5. Smart Pro has a Nitrox Oxygen mix from 21 - 100% at a 1% increments, Ultra Pro 21 - 50% at a 2% increment.

6. Smart Pro includes a additonal feature of Nixtrox Dive Planner.

I think that's about all ..... price for the Ultra Pro, about USD$333 Price for the Memomouse about $160, Price for the Smart Pro about USD$450.

I have the Pro Ultra and in IMHO the difference is really not worth the price. LP price is $299 for Comp and $140 for MemoMouse.
I will be taking my AOW and Nitrox after the Christmas Holidays and the Pro Ultra will more than be able to handle my RECREATIONAL Air and Nitrox diving for a long time to come.

The Algorithm on the Pro Ultra has beem around for a while, but it's time tested and safe within it's limits. You can change the PPO2 settings between 1.2 and 1.95 with the MemoMouse .

120m or 99m depth calculation is really a non issue for most.

Nitrox Mix, If you are staying RECREATIONAL limits (40% or less) either computer will do and 1-2% really won't make much of a difference.

There are quite a few dive planners, V-Planner is one that most consider pretty good for nitrox/deco.

If you are going to go into Multi gas or Trimix gas mixtures then you will need to look somewhere else, Vytec or NiTek He maybe?

That is the same conclusion I came to when on Uwatecs site, nothing really to write home about. Are the new smart coms affected by the recall?

Don't think so .... at least the one I bought is not affected by the recall ......

I have a smart pro and used a pro ultra while my smart pro was at scuba pro for the recall. I wouldn't trade computers willingly again. The Smart Pro is much easier to use, at least thats my opinion. The fact that I don't need a compter to change nitrox mixes is a plus (if I read it right you need the memo mouse to change the pro ultra). When you add in the cost of the memo mouse the two computers are about the same price.

Good to hear from a few of you who have experience with these computers...unlike myself. The only shop in town that carries Scubapro/Uwatec owner is a theif and a liar...so I have refused to set foot in there...have resorted to the other brands and online reasearch instead of dealing with the lds from hell! Thanks for the info everyone!

All things considered, if i were in the market for a Uwatec computer I would probably buy from Leisure Pro and save my self a couple hundred. I paid $599 for my smart pro wrist locally and got lousy service when it got recalled. Since Uwatec replaced those computer bought online I see no real reason to buy one locally.

does the Pro-Ultra have CPU connectivity? i like the Smarttrak software; i use it as backup divelog in addition to my hardcopy one.. excellent software; displays pics, graph, dive specs etc and the infra-red transfer is flawless so far.. hope your LDS is giving u a big discount for the discontinued model mate

From what I've gathered, the Aladin Pro Ultra has PC interface (Memo Mouse, Datatrak*). Whatever that means (I don't really need the PC interface thing).

Here's some info I gathered on Datatrak, just in case you're curious:

With the DataTrak for Windows® software package you’ll receive a compact, portable storage device called a Memo Mouse. This device allows you to store up to 66 hours of diving information from your Aladin dive computer wherever you go diving. And wherever you go diving you’ll only need to take one because files from your dive buddy’s Aladin can also be downloaded to the device. When all the information is displayed later you’ll be amazed at the clarity because all the data has been recorded at 20 second intervals for maximum resolution.

With an Aladin dive computer, DataTrak for Windows® software package and your PC you can store, retrieve, analyse and even print a record of every dive. Move the mouse pointer to any point on the dive graph. It shows your depth, elapsed dive time and the maximum depth. Owners of Aladin Pros or higher will also see the time of the next decompression stop, and total time required for ascent. When a Nitrox computer is connected, the CNS status is also indicated. Fast ascents and any missed deco stops are clearly indicated. DataTrak displays your nitrogen saturation in eight different groups of tissues, and indicates whether they are saturating or desaturating. And it also displays your level of accumulated nitrogen microbubbles in your system after every dive. DataTrak displays any excessive skin cooling that’s been detected by your Aladin’s unique sensors. All this information as well as the date, time of the dive and the water temperature are logged automatically. DataTrak software can display your information in Spanish, French, English and German as well as Metric and Imperial.

whoa, that's quite a writeup on the Datatrak software.. the one that im using "smarttrak" comes bundled with my aladin prime wrist.. judging from the description in ur post, this datatrak + "memo mouse" seem to have way more functions compared to the smarttrak.. well if ur LDS is giving a considerable discount for this discontinued model, sounds like a good buy indeed.. got a pal using it for 180+ dives without a single issue & she highly recommends it..
