Okay, I know, it seems ridiculous to ponder having your blackberry with you on a dive. For me, I'm often going out diving to get AWAY from all that. :) BUT with the introduction of the newest line of PDA phones, I'm starting to think it's getting less ridiculous. Here's why:

1. Nav: The new BlackBerry Storm and some other phone/PDA's are now including built-in GPS capabilities. This could be very useful for finding dive sites from the surface, especially if you're not diving from a boat that has the equipment. As a frequent shore diver, I find this possibility interesting!
2. Photo: The Storm has a 3.2 megapixel camera. Other devices now do as well. Okay, the lens may not be so hot, and manual controls or strobes are definitely out, but I shot some really great pics with my old 3MP Olympus 3030!
3. Emergencies: Probably unrealistic, but what if you had an emergency... If the housing had the right capability, you could possibly call or email someone for help and tell them your coordinates from the GPS!

Yeah, okay, you're not going to be emailing or figuring out GPS coordinates underwater, but what do you think? Should we rally one of the housing makers to start development? :D

Please no...give us one damn place where we can get away from it all! My guess is that someone has already done it and it will show up at DEMA soon.

I confirm Blackberries don't like salt water.
I'm managing a Blackberries and mobiles phones and, once upon a time, an american colleague told me:
"hi, Patrick, my Blackberry does't work anymore, I swimmed with it near Cozumel"

Or---slip it into a large camera housing, next to your camera.

OR get an old housing. Or an old can light like you can do for an EPIRB

oh shoot---I just realized we sold the boat with the EPIRB still registered to us.

Catherine, I'm pretty sure the EPIRB registration with the NOAA expires after 2 years.

Oh, thanks.

Cause they asked us for relatives names and people who would know where we were.

I am not sure why he *threw in" all my cool stuff with the boat....:cool2:

he even gave my life boat away. Okay...my intertube.

I just did some dives on the rigs with a guy that took his into the water three times that day.

Of course, he dives a dry suit - dude just zipped it into the suit before flopping off the boat. He took topside pics with it all day, up until moments before he'd zip up and do a giant stride into the water.
