Anyone know the best way to get to Utila from Chicago? Is it easier to fly or take the ferry from La Ceiba? Also, does anyone know the baggage weight limits on the short local flights?

Over the years I've traveled to Utila frequently. Last few years I've started flying direct to Roatan from Houston. Take a cab to the west end where I meet Vern Fine and take the afternoon cruse to Utila, arriving the same afternoon. He charges about $50/$60 ea, way. Saves quite a bit on local airfare and less hassel with luggage. You can coordinate with Vern via email. I have it if you don't already have. If you go with him, say hi for me. Was just there in May.:D

Check flights on Delta out of Chicago. They have been running some pretty good deals to Roatan. Have you been to Roatan? I have never been to Utila but found a good special back to Roatan with FIBR flying Delta so we are leaving in 3 weeks!!!

Where are you flying into? If you are flying to to SAP it is a ways to La Cieba. We flew into SAP last year then took commuter flight to Roatan. One the way back TACA was shut down for taxes or something so we had to take ferry to La Cieba and then hire taxi to get to San Pedro.
Said if we went again we would just fly direct to Roatan which is what we are doing.
That is one reason we have not been to Utila....
Good luck...

To answer your specific question:

A lot of folks are flying into Roatan RTB and then getting on one of the private charter yachts a cab ride away located in the West End area. You can also charter a private aircraft. I don't recall the price, but it didn't make me gasp out loud.

I have done neither, but I know a lot of folks do it. Others posting here will have more detailed info than I do.

If you can get to La Ceiba in time for the morning or afternoon ferry, travel is easy. Most connections do not allow for this however. See if TACA has a flight from San Salvador. No reason to go to Roatan first when you want to get to Utila

Hi from Chicago to Utila. See if you can fly into Roatan, then you can take Vern's catamarran at 1pm from the West End on Roatan for $100 US return. He leaves for Roatan at 6:20am from Utila to return.

I don't know what kind of fares you are looking at but from where I live, it's a LOT cheaper (and faster) for me to fly into San Pedro instead of Roatan.
Where are you staying in Utila? Laguna Beach arranges their own charters between San Pedro and Utila and their price is competitive with the commuter. I can fly to San Pedro, use their charter and it's still cheaper than flying into Roatan. Not to mention I would still need to get to Utila.
FYI...I book my own flight to San Pedro but arrange the rest through Utila Dive Ventures
