Hi Cheeky- Thanks for the offer. Just so happens I'm heading to Utila in two weeks. Can't wait but I'll have to admit the United States Consular report made me a little edgy.
They mention some pretty scary crimes against both locals and tourists especially in San Pedro Sula and Roatan. No mention of Utila but I do have to come through San Pedro Sula. Now, I'm hoping this is all hype. I live in New York and well, let's face it, there's a lot of hype about the crime here and yet I've never had a problem just staying out of places I obviously don't belong.
Anything I need to know to be safe or just use common sense? I'm not actually leaving the airport, just switching flights.
(Please don't be ofended, I had to ask)
Oh- and welcome to the boards. I'm new myself and it's such a great thing. Hope you enjoy!

Susan, I am heading to the Utila Aggressor at the end of the month. I am flying from Newark and changing planes in San Pedro Sula also. I'm not worried. Regardless of where you are be aware of your surroundings and people near you. I have no worries about my upcoming traveling. Please update us when you get back.

Hi Susan6868

Common sense goes a long way to staying safe. Use it and you will be fine. Utila has a low crime rate. Violent Crime like you have read about in San Pedro Sula and Roatan dont exist here in the same way. 99% of people live on Utila in the main bay. It's a small community. Bycle theft is the biggest problem here. Leave your bike unlocked, you may as well throw it in the sea. The ferry's jetty is controlled. The police office overlooks it. As a result the gangs in the mainland can't get off the ferry without being seen by the chief of police. - Unfortunately for Roatan, it means they go there.

I look forward to seeing you here in Utila. Stop by UDC and say hello.

Hey 2 Bar, the Utila Aggressor has made its first appearance here for some months. Causing a bit of a stir. It's a very nice boat.

I am travelling with 2 freinds who both did Galapagos with them. I can't wait. I'm hoping to meet some whale sharks.

Hey Cheeky - since you offered - I'm coming down to Utila next weekend (my first time there). I'm staying at the U Lodge. What's your favorite thing to do when you're not diving? Like a bar, a walk, a place to shoot off some film, or just watch the sunset? Should I rent a bicycle? Or anything that's on your "don't miss" list that isn't obvious (like getting wet)? Thanks.

Oh, Utila Utila. I left there in 1999 and still miss it. I'm gonna send some of my photos to the aboututila.com web site next week. Great site for Utila info. There were a lot of people at UDC in 1999 who swore they would never leave...but looks like they did. I see Jim (Hutchinson) is a CD now, but not a UDC is that right? Where's Reiner gone to? Camilla? Diane? Is Ben still there?

Say hi from Jamie.

I'm meeting Steve and Fran in July here in Phuket - they used to run the Bundu cafe.

Have a good day.
