Do you know why the long hose is donated instead of the back up reg? I didn't think you did. the long hose is donated 1 because it works 2 ( this is the part that most of you should remember) it is because of a thing called roll off. if your left post rolls off in an overhead enviroment, the ooa diver will now be hit twice with ooa. instead the donating diver hits a reg that has been rolled off he/she can reach back and turn the left post on. left post roll off , right post roll on.

As you can see, the length of the hose doesn't mean it works.

I thought we were talking about rec set-up, where you would probably have this all running off one 1st stage? Hence rolloff wouldnt be an issue, it really isnt much of an issue with a single H valve either, only doubles - in which case mine are routed much as you say, but newbies arent going to be doing that are they? Maybe useful for them to know for future use, but not relevant to the discussion at hand.

I still really enjoy my long hose, and my training is TDI/NACD not the voodoo people that are being called on here

Rock bottom = amount of gas required by two divers to go from the bottom to the surface in an emergency gas sharing situation (making all nec stops).

We give ourselves 1 minute for an emergency on the bottom (this can be tweaked, if you want 2, use 2)

1 minute for each 30' on the way up

we'll include min deco (1min at 30, 1 min at 20, 1 min at 10) - if you don't want to do this - don't!

Assume 1 cu' SAC

we then need to convert out sac to average atmospheres for the dive

Here's an example - it's NOT perfect, but if gives you an idea of how this works

We are doing a 100' dive:

total ascent time (with stops) is 6 mins (x2 divers) = 12 minutes of gas - SAC x average ATAs = 2, 12 minutes x 2 cu'/min = 24cu of air - and you can take it from there converting the cu to psi depending on yoru tank size. (it comes out to about 1000psi for an al 80)

The use of a 7' hose is not taught to new divers in standard OW classes anywhere.

They don't teach much else either. Just enough, the basics, then you're on your own.
