If for some reason your backup does not work then you buddy breathe your long hose that you donated.

BTW - a good way to test that your backup reg is functioning before every dive is simply to breathe off it while you're putting your fins on.

I was taught that this (checking your backup reg) is part of the pre-dive "head to toe"/bubble check/s-drill.

Slightly off topic but....

This is not a valid argument for the "disadvantages" of pony bottles. You would not have touched your second primary or octo since the start of the dive either yet you would plan for emergencies as though it would work. Your pony is no less reliable than your octo or second primary.

Matt, some people won't sling a pony because of a certain training agency advises against it. I don't have that prob. my ponies, decos and stage bottles all work when I turn them on. Or I wouldn't own them :)

Another reason to sling a pony. dissimilar tank sizes. Your buddies got double 120s and a deco ,you got double 80s and a deco . You add another 80 cuft stage and you both are golden. The 80 is reserve and you don't have to touch it anyway. 1/3rds rule.

Here's one onebody hit on . Your at deco hitting 50/50. another diver (that you don't know) signals OOA, which reg does he/she get. That's what I thought. I was tought to give the deco reg. NOT, at which point I have to unclip my primary.

If you are talking about GUE...they would just call it a stage. (If not GUE...well...you can fill us in)

Donate what you breath...Your backup is around your neck...no need to unclip anything.

It hasn't gone out the window.

Pre-dive, you should have figured out just how much gas you need in your tank to get yourself and your buddy up from the deepest point in the dive. This is called rock bottom.

You turn the dive at some point before you reach this amount of remaining gas.

I know about rock-bottom, etc. But thank you (and the others) for explaining. When you said

I assumed you meant ran out of gas, not had an equipment malfunction. My bad, I guess.

You would give the reg you are breathing (the deco reg), that's the whole point - you give the OOA diver a reg that you know is working right then. In terms of another random diver coming up to you OOA - that's a tough situation. There's a thread on here about Rule Number 1 - many people will extend that not just to their buddy, but the whole boat.

yeah , that's what they say, but know it's time to start doing longer decos and tox out the OOA diver, now I'm having fun. I started with an OOA and now I got shake an bake. and I still got deco

My answer is the breakaway O-ring on the primary bolt snap

You are saying you woud give up your deco reg to an OOA diver? Wow, what about when he finishes his deco and you have extended your hang time because you are now decoing on back gas. I guess you would escort him to the surface then finish that long hang.
You're a saint!
