What is the best place to buy gear online? I plan to buy what I can from my local shop, but I will probably need to supplement with a few online purchases to make it work.

Dude, you have to sort the wheat from the rubbish, and part of that is that you don't need
to be a diver to understand gear you have to be good with your hands like with other stuff

Used stuff rules take your time or buy today just buy it so stay away from those dive shops
So don't take your stuff in there for assessment, for them to sting you, for what you can do

If you know how to change a spark plug in a lawn mower, you can assess, and fix dive gear

and if you can do it in an electric one better still

So yeah the gear on offer is too dear, but do not let those divers back there hold you back
with their fear, for you or coz they can't do stuff

Used isn't bad... But rather than random Craigslist ads you'd do better to ask on SB and get stuff from people well known here (and still much cheaper than new).
On the sheer age of stuff... I use stuff I rebuilt from as early as the late 50's. If you are handy, and into DIY, vintage gear does well and lasts forever if maintained.
Respectfully,

James
Used is not bad. I buy plenty of used gear. But a new diver has zero clues about what is what. Better to pay retail than to pay twice or thrice.

Yeah well, suggesting because someone is a new diver, they must lack understanding
is far more a reflection of your lacking so get off the internet and go buy some books

I paid 150 for a complete recreational set with the Scubapro MK17 as first stage and 2 good second stages, 1 bcd, wetsuit, boots, fins, and also 1 12liter steel cylinder (out of test, but I am not worried about that).
So 1200 is way too much.
Old wetsuits, boots and fins are worth nothing. The computer is also very old, so max of 50. The regset I bought is worth here around the 200 if it is checked. The cylinder is worth without test around the 100. As these are not old things. (but I won't sell it, I will service it and use the regs for techdiving)
So what you mention, I would not buy it. Or maybe only the bcd if that is ok.

See the links in my previous post. Scuba.com is good for general stuff as they carry all the big names. Deep6 for regs and a lot of people like their fins. DGX (divegearexpress) for just about anything, but their BP/W packages are especially good and their lights are solid.

Run what you are thinking about getting from your local shop by us. Also where will you be diving? If it's in Montana, you'll need to do things a little differently from tropical vacation diving.

Price stuff you want online and give the LDS an opportunity to price match or come close. But don’t get ripped off paying double to support a scuba manufacturers distributor network and high margins.

@happy-diver You are just being a troll. An incoherent one at that. If you read the OPs post you would see the truth in my statement, and it's far from the first time we've seen this situation. And even if I am wrong you don't have to be such a jerk.

Thanks for coming to my defense, but I'm not worried about some constructive criticism online. I like to think that I'm smarter than the average bear when it comes to technical things like this. I was formerly an automotive and aviation mechanic. I actually really like the idea of tinkering with my own gear, so I may keep my eye on the used market anyway. I also have a passion for reviving and using old gear. I still have a Windows XP PC from 2002 that honestly runs better than most of what you'd get from best buy. I realize that's a lot different than a regulator at 60 feet.

This also wouldn't be the first time I've taken my life into my hands, I participate in quite a few extreme sports and have always trusted my own work over that of another shop or tech. Diving is a new experience for me though as the risk is much higher.
