I'll preface this by telling I am a Health Specialist for a North Texas city of about 250K. I see plenty of messed up kitchens.

HealthInspections.com: Nationwide Health Inspections at your fingertips. has a report of the most hazardous states to eat in. I do find it interesting that the most common implicated foods are lettuce based salad and seafood. Last year was a tough year for the food industry.

I will also admit the worst case of food poisoning I have ever had was from eating outside the US. Death would have been a vast improvement at one point.

There is a big reason many cruise ships have the mandatory hand sanitizer at the entrance to the restaurants. Norovirus is wicked and extremely easy to spread.
