US Air just sent out emails to their frequent flier customers stating that they will start charging $25 for a second checked bag for all customers purchasing tickets after Feb. 26 and/or flying May 5 or later. The fee applies to all domestic and international flights (including the Carribean and Europe). The fee will be applied both on the outward bound portion of the trip and again on the return. So actually it's a $50 fee unless you can figure out how to return with less than you went with. The only exceptions are medically required equipment (such as walkers or wheelchairs, etc). The fees don't apply if you fly first class, have a silver FF or higher status, or are designated a preferred flier (I'm not sure what that last means). The FAQ on US Air's website further clarified that sports equipment is not exempted from this fee unless it's the only bag checked. Maximum weight limits of 50 lb per bag still apply and carry on limits of 1 small bag plus a personal item (purse, computer case, etc) also still apply. How long before the rest of the airlines jump on board?

They already have. Where you been?

Did it say how much for peanuts?

Yeah, I just got the E-mail.

I think it is safe to assume that most major carriers will now jump on this band wagon.

Personally, I almost always have to pay extra baggage fees --and I can understand why they are doing it but I think for a lot of people, it's just one more reason not to fly.

Of course, some of the super cut-rate airlines, like Spirit Air, have been charging for checked bags for a while.

So far I've only seen that Sun, United and now US Air have jumped on this particular bandwagon. US Air is including international flights which Sun has excluded. And as of this morning, Delta wasn't yet on this wagon, nor was Continental. Of course this may change by the end of the week.
The only opportunities that I see within this situation are 1) folks who are running or planning to open a shipping company and 2) equipment manufacturers who are selling and/or designing lighter weight dive gear.

Well, just one more reason not to fly USAir. Last time I flew with them they gave me plenty of reasons never to fly with them again; this is just the final nail in the coffin. The same applies to United. They have by far the worst delay and cancellation rate of any airline that flies into/out of O'Hare, and now they're charging extra for baggage too--why would I give them my money?
I can sort of forgive Spirit; we call them The Bus. That has always been their business model, and their fares are low enough to justify the extra charges for amenities. But why should I pay more to fly with one of the legacy carriers if I'm being treated badly and nickel-and-dimed for everything?
If American starts doing this too I'm really hosed...

What? You missed my peanut idea?

Run with it. It's all yours.

Pay or stay home. They will all do it by your next flight- that's what I meant when I said (the rest of them) "they already have" ... meaning if United did it...

They know precisely what they are doing.

Please, Please, Please don't let me know that Southwest is doing it. But they run on a different business model.

And I think Spirit only charges $5 if the bag is booked on the internet and $10 if done at the gate. That's a lot easier to swallow than $25.

Prices doubled on Feb 20 of this year - they're now $10 each in advance and $20 at the airport for the first two bags, then $100 each for the next three (plus overweight charges if applicable).

I wasn't aware they'd raised the price but even then, $10 (pre-booked) isn't so bad compared to $25.
