I got a speeding ticket in Maine one time (okay, four times), and had to pay a 10% tax on the fine! :11:

One of the last lines on a Maine-achusetts tax form asks "did you purchase anything for which you did NOT pay Maine-achusetts a use tax?" If you answer "yes" you are obliged to estimate the tax you should have paid and fork it over OR use the handy-dandy chart they provide to calculate how much you owe, based on your AGI. If you claim "NO", you'ld better hope you don't live near America. It'll be a red flag screaming "audit".

So are you voting yes on the property tax reform question in Maine? Have you heard if it has a chance of passing? Personally being a non-resident property owener in Maine I like it but I see it devastating services if it does pass.

Alan,

Oh man, you just opened Pandora's box. :dazzler1:

I generally vote FOR any ballot question that will reduce my taxes and AGAINST any ballot question that will raise my taxes.

Regretably, as a result of Maine-achusetts brand of socialism, the bill will probably cause a great disturbance in the redistribution of wealth so the geniuses in Augusta will likely seek an increase in my income tax. Therefore, I have not yet decided.

The other day there was a newspaper article regarding the woman (Palesky?) that has been the primary aggitator for the cap. Seems she has a somewhat, um, colorful? past.

If I were in charge I'd raise taxes on "people from away" and reduce the taxes on residents. "People from away", regardless of from where they originate and where they infiltrate, frequently want services yet feel the cost should be 'equally' distributed. For examples of 'cost of services', look at the history of York (Village, etc.) Of course, flatlanders and M****oles are also weaving a trail of destruction in America (NH). :eyebrow:

On the other hand, I've been told by some long-time residents of the Kittery area that they welcome the influx of new-blood; it will reduce the in-breeding and corresponding effect on mental capacity. (sit on porch and play banjo now)

p.s. on a side note ... I eagerly await the day the Feds close the PORTSMOUTH Naval Shipyard. I predict that Maine-achusetts will suddenly realize the base is, in fact, in New Hampshire.

I don't know what you people are complaining about. I used to live in NY city for 9 years and sales taxes on everything is like 8.5-9%. Here while living with the "Maine-achusetts brand of socialism" I only pay 5% sales tax, my income tax seems much lower and you have great roads, public service, environment protection, etc. What I don't understand was where the hell were my NY taxes going, roads are still as crappy as always when I visit, beaches are too dirty to swim, all public offices are beuracratic nightmares...I can go on forever.

We obviously drive on different roads. There's one in my neighborhood (Overlook Rd. in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston) that has been solely responsible for destroying the suspensions of ever car any housemate of mine has owned while living there, and it has also ripped the oil pan off of at least one friend's (rental) car, leaving an ugly black trail all the way from the pothole I like to call "the sea of tranquility" all the way to my house. It was his fault though... he was silly enough to try driving 20 mph on it.

Yes, the road is so bad we've named the potholes. You damn near need a guide to negotiate it. It looks (in some places) like it was paved once, but not in the last 30 years. There's been a lot of runoff, erosion, and frost damage since then.

Do all the housemates of yours only buy fords and dodges? Try a Japanese car for a change :)

Actually I was referring mostly to major highways (alghough this Mass Pike construction is getting on my nerves lately). Last time when I was in NY my tire's ribcage cracked when I was driving about 50 mpg though a 4 inch pothole on Belt Parkway near JFK.
