Hi folks, I am currently in the process of replacing my current divecomputer. Currently I am using the Suunto zoop novo.

In general am I planing to possibly go into the Tec-rec direction with probably advancing further into deco dives. However I don’t think that I will proceed to doing dives deeper than 50-60m (if there is a nice wrack or so). Frankly spoken, I think I will probably find my maximum depths at around 45meters.

Thus I am looking at the following choices:
  • Suunto Eon Core
  • Apeks DSX
  • Shearwater Peregrine TX
  • Shearwater Perdix 2
With the Suunto I like the three button interface and the ability to fully customize the screen to my individual needs. Although in the past the FusedRGBM algorithm was a downside, this is passé since last December, when Suunto dropped an update for the Eon, making the Buhlmann algorithm available with custom GF.

The Apeks I find interesting, as it gives the ability to also go into the more advanced technical direction then the Suunto. However I don’t really know how much the screen ist customizable. Same as the Suunto it has a 3 button interface which I find slightly more appealing than a 2 button interface.

The peregrine does all I probably will need and maybe more, but doesn’t allow for full blown technical diving (again the question is will I ever go down that route). I am not sure in the moment how I like the screen layout with the rec mode. This brings me to the Perdix. As I most certainly will never do ccr, I don’t need that function. The oc-tec layout I like (especially with the customizability) however, in that case it doesn’t show safety stops. The changeable battery is no real factor for me, as I would probably go for rechargeable batteries to use in it.

Additionally I do nitrox and will most likely go down the road of deco dives with gas switches.

This all said, I would appreciate your opinion (including arguments) on which computer to pic out of those four (or feasible AI alternatives apart from Garmin). I am also happy about experiences.

I have the Peregrine TX and love it. The bottom center and right spaces are customizable and can show up to 5 fields of information of your choosing. Air pressure is also a field and it can't be removed but it will be reduced in size if you place any other info in the center column.

The rechargable battery lasts for several dives, I just got back from Coz where I did 14 dives over 6 days averaging close to an hour each. My TX still shows just over 50% charge.

Ratio computers would also fit your requirements nicely. Even their base models will meet your requirements happily. Use the IX3M 2 GPS for similar style of diving and have been more than happy with it

Perdix is bullet proof but you might not need it.

Ratio computers are good.

Check if the Suunto can now display stops in 3-meter/10 feet increments. A friend of mine had it and it was a major pain because he wasn’t able to tell the rest of the team how much longer before we can go up - Suunto does the “continuous” deco by default, even with Buhlmann. He is now a Shearwater convert.

My advice, go and find an instructor you'd wan't to do your tec-course with and ask his/her opinion on these computers in relation to the courses and diving you're gonna do.

Regarding rechargeble batteries for the perdix, if you are going to do cold water dives (hemmoor kreidesee!?) then shearwater does not reccomend using rechargables, but (non-chargable) saft or energizer lithium batteries.
As they will perform as needed, whereas the performance of chargable batteries will become unpredictable.

@McHugh
Get proper training FIRST as suggested in #7.
If your max depth is about 45m then you really do not need a dedicated tec computer.
Keep your Novo and buy another one, set both of them to gauge mode. Get yourself a slate to write down your dive plan.
There are plenty of deco software in the market. I am familiar with DecoPlanner 2 and 3, have made just over 500 baby deco dives before given up tec dive because of age. It was fun.

Peregrine (TX) is probably the "obvious" choice if you plan for more deco dives.

A very nice option as you are in Germany are the Heinrichs Weikamp computers. Personally I have found their screens nicer than the Peregrine. So either:
or

however they do not have transmitter support if that is something you want. I'm still diving an old OSTC Mk.2.
