Hello!

I have wasted my entire day re-working a SCUBA tank specifications list. I've been working with the Huron Scuba list for *years*, but I'm suspicious of the information: where did it come from? Also, it includes a lot of junk I've never seen in real life, as well as tanks that no one should *ever* dive. So, I completely reworked it.

My favorite part is that I've included links to where the data came from. In most cases, it's straight from the manufacturer, or at least a major US distributor. (So Blue Steel and XS Scuba for Faber, for example.) I've also added a few extra columns. The most important is the water volume of the tanks. With that, you can figure out the true capacity of the tanks -- and not just with air.

I'm including a PDF here. This is just the simple list with the water volume added and all numbers updated. This is for quick and easy reference. But I'm also including the spreadsheet I created as well. This has several additional columns. It has a column that calculates the true air capacity of the tank (including compressibility factor) from the stated water volume at rated pressure and the difference between rated pressure and calculated, as well as a column showing EAN32 capacity at 3600 PSI, and tank factors based on both the air and EAN32 capacities.

If all of that sounds too complicated, simply hide or delete columns E through J. And that's what the PDF is! :)

I've also both expanded and cleaned up the original list. I've added Worthington and Metal Impact tanks, and I've removed some goofy tanks (like Heiser tanks and weird MP tanks). The biggest items removed are the OMS steel tanks. I really wish I had a reference for these, but I can find nothing of verifiable value. It doesn't help that OMS doesn't actually make tanks, and they changed suppliers over the years... so without verification, I simply removed them. If you have a verifiable source (not just some random list on the Internet!), let me know!

There's more notes and comments in the spreadsheet, so check it out for further information.

I'd love any suggestions or thoughts you might have -- or sources for manufacturer specs, particularly for the OMS steel tanks, but also early PST tanks. I only have references for the E7/E8 (3442) tanks. If you have anything from the manufacturer for the LP or true-HP (3500) tanks, that would be good too.

P.S.: Grrr! You can upload MS Office formats, but *NOT* Open Document formats! :( So, I've exported it to Excel format. Hopefully it'll be properly formatted for you... It expanded everything to a million decimal points, but it will still work.

You may want to check the Fabers. I have LP85s ( the white ones) and they are for sure not -1 empty but more +0.5 empty (with valve).
 
Yeah... I just checked the manufacturer source:

Blue Steel Scuba - Cylinder Specs

LP85 is +2.32 empty. LP108 is +2.98. Per the spec, that is without valve.

Don’t argue with me: I took it from the manufacturer spec. Argue with them! :) (And that’s a big reason why I redid this: to know where the info comes from.)

I’m not saying that any of this is accurate. I *am* saying that each and every line is direct from a manufacturer-supplied resource (except for the Catalina S20, which only DGX has ever heard of — but they actually sell them today, so I added it).

As for color: I want as few lines as possible that supply as much meaning as possible. That’s why I dropped the Faber epoxy tanks that were replaced by HDG. There is only a tiny difference, and it saved like 12 confusingly-similar lines. Same for the 3500-PST’s. If you want highly-specific info, use the sources. And remember that these tanks have varied over their decades-long production runs—and have more tank-to-tank variation within a model anyway!
 
One other thought about this data.

The motivation behind this was largely finishing my full cave class this week. As part of dive planning, there is a focus on calculating thirds as well as dissimilar tanks, including tank factors. Plus there were various discussions on tank similarities and differences: ‘HP117’s are relabeled LP95’s; LP104 and 108’s are the same tank; HP100’s are smaller than LP85’s’ and so on.

Of course, things are a lot more complex than that. But it was DGX’s post on calculating tank capacity — including real gas compressibility — that pushed me over the edge. How big is a tank? It matters what the volume is, what the pressure is *and* what the gas is. And how much of that is taken into account when the manufacturer says, “This holds 100 ft3.”

So I built the spreadsheet to find out how much this matters. In the end, not much: a couple of percent at the most. There’s a couple of tanks that are farther out of whack (something is wrong with the stated numbers for the Metal Impact 100...), but for the most part things are pretty even.

And now you can at least know where the numbers come from and how much tolerance there is between the different numbers.

@StefinSB and @Mike1967 : I have no *idea* what is "right". What is "right" anyway? :)

What I *can* tell you is exactly what the info I have is, and most importantly, *where* I got it from.

In the case of the LP Fabers, that information came from Blue Steel. Here's the link again: Blue Steel Scuba - Cylinder Specs

@Mike1967 : Where did you get that snippet? From the manufacturer? If not, then how do we know where *they* got it from? If so, give us a link so we can take a look! And the info you've included is incomplete: it doesn't have service pressure.

I can also say this: your snippet is not for an LP85. To get 85CF from 10.5l water volume requires a service pressure of >3300 PSI. (85CF=2407l. 2407l/10.5l volume = 229 ATM. 229 ATM *14.7 PSI = 3366 PSI) In other words, the tank you're cutting and pasting about is *NOT* an LP85.

See why knowing where the information came from *and* having all of the information is so important? :)
