I do not believe they were performing any form of mating or courting. The 3rd puffer that was hanging with the 2 had very similar markings to the one being bitten. The puffer fish doing the biting was different in color, though I believe was a spotted puffer. Since these animals have a very pointed beak like mouth I would think any type of biting would leave a nasty wound.

I don't know anything about puffer fish behavior, so I probably shouldn't be responding to this thread at all, but I wanted to say that I think that is a very cool picture. Although, after getting a look-see at that mouth, I can tell you that *I* sure as heck wouldn't want that thing latched on to MY anal opening! OUCH!
