I have dove it when visiting friends in Detroit. You're not missing much. There are a couple paddle boats and other things in there. There is a parking lot across the street you can park and get ready at. You can't enter/exit at the boat ramp. The DNR has been issue tickets to the divers who do. So you will need to walk down the shore a ways to get in the water. You will also need to take a dive flag/float with you. The viz isn't the greatest. Probably 10-15 feet. To get some good depth (i.e. 100'), you'll swim about halfway across it. Unless you have a scooter. :)

We ended up diving there last night. We found a bunch of lines on the bottom, followed them back and forth for half an hour hoping they'd lead to something. I guess they were some sort of navigation course used for training because they didn't really go anywhere. In a way I'm glad I didn't read your post before we went because we did it the easy way. Dropped our gear off at the boat ramp (I did park across the street though) and entered the water there.

Viz was as you said, but it was cold from pretty much top to bottom. About 50' max was all we did.

The line does go to places. Just depends if you have a scooter or not. It will take you WAY out there. I know the folks who laid the line. It isn't a nav course, mostly used to find things and practice running lines for the cave divers on the team.

Well they certainly must have gotten plenty of practice running those lines then. You could tell that whoever put them down was serious about it, with the pvc anchors and all. I wish they would have gone past the paddle boat or whatever. We were all excited to see what was at the end of the first line - a piece of pipe. It was a good chance to dive with my new Zeagle Scout though.

Retro,

I gotta check out the Scout. Would you go back to Union Lake or is it a once a year maybe if we're desperate dive? Better or worse then Chemung Lake? Can't wait to do some more diving, got the tanks filled before my pinched nerve so I'm ready to go once I get my right arm and fingers working again.

I think we're better off going back down to Monroe. Union Lake is a little off the main drag, so it takes a while to get there anyway - even though it's closer. I don't think we'd get Carlos over to Union Lake again either, but Monroe would be something new for him.

Did you really post in the middle of the night? I'm on AL this PM - so you don't think I'm slacking at work.

Best part of the dive (had to go look at my computer to be sure) : 43 degrees and I think the thermocline started at about 5 ft.

Yep, I had AL on Friday so I was up a little latter then ussual.
