Hello,

A few overlooked issues

1) don't put it on coral, it's quite easy.

2) point

3) don't use a housed system w/ a tripod, justwon't work correctly, use a nikonos :)

4) the whole purpose for a tripod is for long shutter times. this will BLUR the passing by fish and lighten the subject.

5) you could find a place to set the tripod out of current/surge. Not all dive spots have these conditions

monopods' will do similar but i've been known to use my elbow as a monopod.

Hello,

Here's a few pointers i've picked up along the way.

Find an area with corraline algae, cyanobacteria or calupera and put your left elbow, hold the camera with your hand and with the right hand take the shot. These items are extremely fast growers and in the case of most will spread even more when broken. There ecology is designed for spreading and abuse of this nature.

Another thing to try, find an area to lay on the bottom. put the unit in the sand/whatnot and use that. find a rock to put it on, section of the hull, etc..

Tripods can be used underwater for macro still shots subjects and video.

I saw these used at last years Monterey U/W shoot out contest.

I was checking out the "Diving under Antarctic ice" site recently and found this picture and explanation on this page. With low ambient light and long corresponding shutter speeds, they must use a tripod for many of their shots. As seen in the photo from the site, there isn't alot of habitat damage if the tripod is resting on a slab of ice.
