I've done this! Hold your reg in with your hand, spew away, block the hole with your tongue, purge for as long as you can, then go back to breathing. When you get out of the water, have your reg serviced. 8o)

I guess I've always been pretty lucky. When I've had to spew, I've kept the reg on my cheek, blasted to the side, swished and spit, then put the reg back in, sans puke.

And y'know, I've always felt much better afterward.

(Maybe I need one of those little disclaimers, like they had on Jackass, that say something to the effect that "This guy is allegedly a professional. Don't do what he does. And if you do and get screwed, don't try to sue us.")

Don't you love choppy seas and diesel fumes? Makes me want to eat a big plate of greasy, scrambled eggs and sausage before my next dive...

For those that think you can do all these fancy antics with a reg while your puking you might want to rethink it.

Look at how hard it can be holding onto a bowl or even the toilet when the chunks fly. When your muscles start squeezing that stuff out they aren’t the only muscles trying to grab something.

These ideas work fine in the pool with a simulated puke but in the real world it will be like trying to air brush the Amtrak logo on a moving train.

KEEP the reg in your mouth. Grab a hold of it and blow chunks. When you are done and you know you your done rinse it out.

You’re dealing with a lot of involuntary muscle responses when you puke. Trying to mix those with precise voluntary responses under water means trouble.

I have tossed chunks many many times over the years. Most were in the Navy when we were still a little half lit from the prior nights activities. :beerchug: Stale booze and pickled eggs and sometimes goldfish make a lousy mix. But just keep the reg in until it passes. The reg will work and clean up just fine.

This is how a politician would do it. Swim to your buddy, signal out of air, hurl through buddys reg, give the polluted reg back to buddy leaving him the burden and expense of cleaning up the mess.

I am curious about the posts recommending that the reg be serviced after an "event". Could contact with vomit cause damage to the internals of the second stage? I would have thought that a relatively good cleaning after the event, followed by a decent clean back at base would suffice. Or not?

This is a really pertinent question for me, as I seem to have more than my fair share of incidents.

Cheers,

Andrew

if you feel it coming on change to your AAS. keep it in yr mouth while in the act. when it's all done go back to your primary and give the occy a good purge. then you're breathing thru a nice clean reg and if your buddy needs help he gets the tasty one. :l:

Why take the chance on switching? There are times people can't make it to the can in time so I would not recommend changing. If the urge is there grab on and hold tight. Having the reg out when it hits could be deadly.

I know guys that have never tossed chunks in their long diving lives and I know others that have several times. I know mine have mostly been my fault except when I have had the flu. Mostly it is a rare thing to have happen.

so... does this happen alot to divers? (puking underwater i mean)

If you dive long enough it will more than likely happen to you...unless of course you are confined to flat water, are a granola muncher in the a.m., and don't sip the hootch the night before.
