Glad you brought this up. =)

I have had my fair share of underwater "chunders" due to my motion sickness issues. When I feel the urge coming, I make sure that I get a good grip on my reg to hold it in place. I do the necessary through the reg. Once the spasms have passed and I have regained my composure, I remove the reg and rinse it quite a few times. Never felt the need to press the purge button with it out my mouth, as the nasty bits invariably end up shooting out the exhaust valve (ugh!). I just swish it around, breathe, swish, breathe, until the air stops tasting like -ahem-. I also gargle with the seawater at the same time. Then of course the reg gets a good cleaning back on land. I have not had my reg tech complain of solids in the reg during servicing (yet).

I also don't eat any really chunky food in the morning. Mostly oats, breakfast cereal and the like.

To be honest I have more problems with the bit up my nostrils than bits in the reg(!!).

A friend of mine claimed that he removed his reg before vomiting once, but I really struggle to believe that. I can't see how in the throes of stomach spasms one can control the urge to take a big breath. I know I can't.

Cheers,

Andrew

Maybe we should have a poll.....Hurling, remove reg or keep it in?

Personally, I work with vomiting people on a daily basis. Some are nice neat, quiet vomiters and other hurl violently and often. The "active" vomiters gasp for breath in between rounds. You don't want to risk aspirating a huge gulp of water while vomiting at depth. I'm sure if you gulp in alot of sea water at depth, you'll have a new problem called not breathing anymore.

On one condition...you can only vote if you have ACTUALLY spewed at depth. Arm chair quarterbacks need not apply.

i just had a thought... what if you use a rebreather?
Hope you have time to bail out to OC before hurling.

I have always taught keeping the reg in the mouth. I worked with an instructor who had an incident invloving blueberry waffles at Casino Point on Catalina. He suddenly got sick at depth, and did not stop until well after he surfaced. He learned that Garibaldi seem to like blueberries. Oh, and he kept his reg in.

ROFLMAO....I can TOTALLY picture that! I have done corn chowder before and can attest to Garibaldi liking corn and potatos :D
Other noteables:
Hamburgers, corn dogs, PBJ, 7-11 burritos. The burritos were the hardest ones. They seem to reform in your stomach into on fist sized mass of dough and beans...kind of a ***** to spit through a reg.

Ahhh...not to go look for the monitor wipes and get the diet coke off my screen.

I wonder if he ever ate blueberry waffles again.

Kinda makes you want to order blueberry soup, eh?
