I think my initial suggestion might have come from an old PADI rescue diver manual, but I'm not sure. I'll take a look through my books when I get home.

MSilvia:The obvious dilemma is that if you take the regulator out of your mouth, you'll reflexively gag on seawater. If you leave the regulator in... well, I wouldn't want to clean it, and you'll need an alternate air source.
I haven't tried it, but the following was once suggested to me:
Take the second stage out of your mouth, and hold it at about chest height, purging a stream of air directly up and into your mouth. That way, the vomit can drift away harmlessly, and you'll have some air to gag on instead of fluid.
It sounds good in theory...
MSilvia:Back in the 1984/1987 revised Rescue Diver manual, they advise exactly that. Hold the regulator at the corner of your mouth with the purge valve depressed.
